I need a program, or some way to completely remove all the information off a HDD to the point that it cannot be saved or read again. I want to format it, and reinstall windows and everything, but I want to remove all the data first to the point that no matter how I try, the data cannot be found again.

There's no way to completely remove data, short of physical destruction of the drive, that is, burning it until it's just ashes.

I think a 35-pass DoD grade disk wipe will do the trick. Try Eraser (http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/).

Seagate's DiscWizard has a Zero Fill Utility. It works on non-Seagate drives as well.

EDIT://
Seagate DiscWizard is a boot disc utility. Eraser, runs w/in the OS.

Thanx for the link, Kwitko!! :smiles:

These programs write the enitre drive, first 1, then 0 and so on.
They take a long time to run, but there is no recoverable data what so ever.

Darrik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) will zero fill a drive with an unlimited number of passes.

killdisk will also do a 35 pass Department of Defense-grade wipe..

That **** can take DAYS though.

So, that should do it then. One of these utilities should do the trick...

Active KillDisk (http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm) (boot disk)
Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://dban.sourceforge.net/) (boot disk)
Eraser (http://sourceforge.net/projects/eraser/) (Windows)
Seagate DiscWizard (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard) (boot disk & windows versions)

Good Luck!

That would certainly work, however, V|P intends to re-use the HDD...

Oh. Really? He didn't let us know here unfortunately. We only had his post (post #1) to go by in determining what he needed.

Oh, well. Good information posted here anyway.

V|P, please, keep us apprised so we know whether you need help any longer or not.. Thankyou. :)

Yeh, I sent him a prog to do the deed about 3 hours ago, he said that wiping the hard drive via software was a little less conspicuous than taking a ten pound sledge to it. I told him I would just take it to my shed, fire up the oxy-acetylene and turn it into a spray of molten metal.

Whatever you do, don't pick a utility that is endorsed by the NSA. According to my wife (she's a cryptographer) anything that the NSA endorses has already been broken or backdoored by the NSA. ;)

It didn't work for some reason, and killdisk sounds so exhilarating. Yes thrax, you got me, it was 250 GB of PR0N

I'll bet it wasn't porn. In general, porn distributors don't go after content thieves. Which leaves movies, music, or programs. Possibly TV shows. (And really, who only has 250 GB of porn).

No one is after me. My parents may be after me if they saw what was on it. And I've never had more than 1 GB of porn on my HDD....
