they aren't allowed to do so...but this could have been an oversight by the teller, cuz i think they are the people who approve/disaprove it
they arent allowed to, bring it up next time you are at the bank. Someone is going to get in trouble, but not you.

depends on your bank. Here's from one specific bank:
What if I postdate a check?
You agree that when you write a check, you will not date the check in the future. If you do and the check is presented for payment before the date on the check, we may pay it or return it unpaid. We will honor a postdated check if we receive advance notice from you at such a time and in such a manner as to afford us reasonable opportunity to act. The notice must be in writing, and it must specify the date, amount, and check number and name of the payee. Notices are effective for the time periods stated under Stop Payment Orders.

thanks for the imput guys...I did a little research on my banks policies... in brief they state they will process checks when they recieve them, regardless of date on check. Since they process 1000's of checks each day there is no method to check the date...
I have a photo of the check and the date they processed it. I might bring it to the bank and see what they say though.

I've always understood that you're not supposed to post-date checks. I guess that's why...
When you give a post-dated check to someone, you have to rely on their willingness to comply w/ the date and not deposit it before-hand. So, unfortunately, you're pretty much at their mercy...

I feel for you, fatcat6- I never used to have problems with banks, but the last 3-4 years have been hell. Just 2 weeks ago our bank processed a cheque post-dated for the END OF FEBRUARY. They didn't say so much that it was against their policy, just that we can't expect someone at the teller window or at the processing center to look at all cheques- Oh no, then how come they never screw up the amount? The answer is BS, but what can you do? I have to post-date them for my daughters' daycare, or pay the whole year up front... and THAT ain't gonna happen.
I think the root of the problem is the banks are hiring progressively more and more young people who are inexperienced, as well as creating an atmosphere similar to a sweatshop, or a car dealership- "produce NOW or get the hell out". Almost every single time I go into my branch (every 2 months or so) there are 1-2 new name plaques in the offices, and there are only 10 offices!

Right or wrong, lawful or unlawful, I don't know, but that's the way it is. I do almost all of my bill paying now through automatic deductions from payroll, automatic withdrawals from my accounts, or electronically. We write very few checks.

well, its not un-lawful to post date a check, found that out doing some google research...I always put the first day of the month when i write my rent check, but usually send it out a few days ahead. It's just this time I guess the landlord needed the funds for beer er....i mean cashed it before the 1st and it processed. I had plenty of funds, just found it odd that the bank allowed it to process before the date of the check.

I've been going to Washington Mutual for several years now, in Houston, Orlando, and now the Dallas area and all have been excellent to me. Even gotten quite a bit of refunds from all the over drafting I used to do.

the mikeyD's here in the city during the day has about 65% elderly people working the dayshift. It is a really clean establishment, paintings on the walls, nice chairs/tables etc and the employees actually care. Now the night-time crew i wouldnt know about, since I usually only each lunch there.
