Hey all!

I have a dillema: I need to install WiFi in area under high voltage line. I was wondering what afect it will have to wireless? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

Hello Lacunas. Welcome to Short Media!

Where does the wireless equipment need to be located - inside or outside?
Is it for an internal wirless network & Internet connectivity?
Or are you trying to network two or more houses/buildings in close proximity?

Do you have the wirless equipment already?
If so, what equipment do you have?
Do you have any reason to believe it won't work?
(e.g. You or others in your neighborhood have tried but have been unsuccessful or experienced problems caused by the power lines.)

Note:

FYI: There are network expanders which plug into wall power sockets. (http://www.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm/printable)
I did some searching on Yahoo! I didn't see any mention of power line interference w/ respect to wireless networking.
Rather, w/ the right equipment, (household) power lines can be employed in aiding in the delivery of the wireless signal.

Here's a wireless networking tutorial you might find helpful as well. :smiles:

I'm just starting this project.

Wireless should be located in high voltage transformer and other electricity spots.
Equipment should be located outside. Still working what equipment we gona need.
Mostly it is going to be used for Voip and connect laptops in case of damage.

At first I'm trying to colect information. Later on we gona try how it works in reality (are we getting any interfere, etc). And if everything ok, we are going to sign up to accomplish it.

This my situation

lacunas, I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you exactly how to do that one. I don't think you'll know what you've got till you do a field test. In the time it would take someone to measure all the parameters and do all the calculations, you could throw some wireless stuff out in the field and see what you've got.

I would say that the wireless signal will not be affected by high voltage. The Access Point themselve are where you might have problems with since they still have to have a physical cable connected somewhere. I am going to guess if you are havning any problems the AP or the wireless expanders is where you might want to look first. There are probably devices more resistant to EMI, just have to check into them more. STP and Fiber cabling are more resistant to EMI also.
