What would someone do if they had a good idea for a Web 2.0 site kind of like Digg or MySpace with totally different purpose, but they didn't have the programming skills to well, program it? It would most likely use PHP, JS, and a CMS, and a lot more advanced stuff... Don't ask me to post the idea...

copyright it. Ideas can be copyrighted iirc.

They would do what all the other idea people/dreamers out there do: bust their asses to assemble the team of people with the skills that are needed to get the job done.

Greatness is not achieved alone, most of the time ;)

Well I thought I would find someone here, it's just I can't afford to pay anyone, and I'm a minor. If anyone is interested, let me know...

Here's what you do.

1. Learn how to web program. Seriously, it's just necessary even if you're going to have someone else do this. You should never, ever do something like this without understanding how it works. I'm not saying become a master programmer, I'm saying get the basics down so you can have an intelligent conversation about it (and therefore know what you're asking and when you're being had).

2. Read this (http://paulgraham.com/startupmistakes.html). That'll cover the rest of it.

3. You can't copyright ideas; you copyright products and designs. In any case, every word you write, photo you take, picture you draw, and program you code is copyright you as soon as you do it.

//edit: And here's why you'll never get help by posting a cryptic message: Everyone who can code that well is already working on something, whether it's personal, professional, or both. That's why I had to learn to code to make Short-Media start growing.

Sounds like ruby on rails to me.

Apart from what Keebs has said, right there you dead in the water. Nobody is going to take you seriously if you tell them you underage and you can't pay them for their skills.

Many a sucessful business has started in someones basement or garage. Get the skills to at least create something you can take to show someone. If it's as good as you say it is, then maybe someone will come on board with you.

If you can't afford to pay, it's time to do it yourself.

Everyone above is right really man. I have posted many ideas on this site about wanting to start up a site of some sort, but it all comes down to funding really. Me and my friend who knows how to program are still busting our ass on a project we are getting together. It takes time and patience, trust me.

Well I do have a friend that's the same age as me who know a lot about porgramming in C, but I don't know about web langs. I'll have to learn then I guess... Pixel2Life should be a good starting place right?

Well if he knows C then he practically knows PHP....

Nobody is going to take you seriously if you tell them you underage and you can't pay them for their skills.Well, it's possible they'd do it without pay, but you better be willing to split ownership of the product with them then.

I really recommend going PHP/MySQL. It's very open and very well-supported. Ruby on Rails is all slick and ****, but how many Ruby programmers do you know if you need help? If you friend has coded in C, PHP will seem like Kindergarten. I've never used Pixel2Life, myself - don't really know anything about it. I primarily use books and php.net for reference.

Yea, that's what I was going to do if it ever works out. But I'm going to go ahead an learn some basics before I even mention it to anyone.

pixel2life is good(just gotta weed out the crap), I always recommend it, but I further recommend sitepoint.com as well which just plain rocks. And their books are great too.

If I'm reading this and other articles correctly, doesn't it say that as long as I put it in writing and have proof of it's date, the idea is copyrighted? If that's not what it is, I apologize, but just explain briefly what it means.

Eh, I've heard of this, but it doesn't mean it'll work.

If you wrote "a social networking site where people can customize their pages, 'friend' each other, send messages, blah blah blah" and put it in an envelope and mailed it to yourself in 2001, I'd say "good luck" trying to claim copyright infringement on MySpace.

Farmers Copyright I think it's called, it doesn't hold up in the court so don't count on it. Getting something copyrighted costs like $37 IIRC. You send it in to the proper people who look into it... viola. In the meantime you can put the copyright notice on your site or works. For images I'd use a watermark over the whole image, something hardly noticeable, and as well as something very noticeable at the bottom or sides so that if anyone steals it, they'll have to cut it out, and you'll have the original.

Makes it very difficult for someone to steal it, and when they do, someone cleaver enough usually posts it on a forum they reside, and they get busted, flamed, etc... and the world finds out. HAH

If you are thinking about making a web based type program or something like this read this online book. It will really make you take a second approach on how you are going about things. I'm about half way through with it, me and my friend are still in the works of getting a project up and going and it has made us change somethings for the better.

Okay, Clutch, I just read this post and I've started reading the link. RWB, can you go into more detail of who I send it to, if there is a minimum age etc..

The copyright office, look it up.
