Yesterday I donated blood for the first time, and it wasn't as bad as I expected. My fraternity sponsored the blood drive so I was kinda forced morally to do it, or else I'd seem like an ass, which I'm glad for. Otherwise I probably would have never donated blood, and I can honestly say that next time I'm eligible to donate again, I will. You give up about 1/2 hour-45mins of your time and you get free food, and you help save a life. I thought that I was going to get very light headed because I have had blood drawn in the past for tests, and one time I got light headed and not that much blood was even drawn. Anyway I felt fine after donating, and didn't get light headed at all. I'd recommend anyone who hasn't donated and is eligible to give it a try.

I wish I could but I was in Europe too close to the time of the Chernobyl disaster. No one will let me give blood. :-/

Hey man, props to you! :cool2:

I've given blood probably 5 or 6 times before, it isn't much of a big deal anymore. They first time I really didn't want to though because I am kinda scared of needles.

From what I've seen, girls tend to be ones who usually get sick or light headed. Also their iron level in there blood is often low . I have seen many girls denied for this.

Anyways, way to go. Giving blood is a very good thing, I always feel good about myself after I do it. Of course the free food and tshirt they usually give me doesn't hurt either

cheers :jared:

Not sure what my blood type is yet. They said I'll receive some stuff in the mail with the info after all of the tests are done.

why is it pointless? O+ is a donor for A+, B+, and AB+. I give regularly, but I never find out my type...too lazy to call the number.

O+ is the universal reciver not usiversal doner. i can take anyones blood, by force if needed. >:]

You've got that almost exactly backwards. I wouldn't recommend taking any blood type besides O.

O+ blood can be used for AB+ A+ B+ and O+ recipients, and O- can be used for all recipient blood types. AB is the universal recipient that can take all other types.

I'm O- with none of that virus thing so babies love my blood. I use to donate every few months... Seems like every time we have a blood drive, I've been sick, on antibiotics, or too busy.

What GH stated is correct... O is the best blood to donate. AB is the true luck one since they can take just about anything.

I'm A+

I was up to 2 gallons donated when for some reason, which I can't recall, I stopped going. It was a long time ago and I just started again last year when our company had the bloodmobile here. I'll probably start donating somewhat regularly again if the truck keeps coming around. :)

Way to go tmh88!

I'm O-, universal donor..

also found out years ago that most adults have an enzyme in their blood that will kill an infant if they get a transfusion of that blood.

.. I don't have this enzyme, so I can donate to infants. I try to give as often as I can.

Passed the 5 gallons donated mark a few months ago.

I'm too scared. Me and needles don't get along. They're my anti-drug.

You should see me in the doctors office when they try to give me an injection.

I can watch as soon as the needle is in. If I try to watch them do it, I tense up and it's hard for them to get the vein.

I can watch as soon as the needle is in. If I try to watch them do it, I tense up and it's hard for them to get the vein. That must be fairly common because the nurse told me to look away if I didn't want to see her insert the needle.

I don't let them get close to me with needles. If i can get it in any other way aside from an injection I'll do it.

I can't watch when blood samples are taken for testing. It freaks me out to see a huge tube bubbling up with my own blood. I don't mind watching when I'm donating blood because it doesnt fill up quickly, but that bubbling action from the tube is hard for me to watch.

I take it you opt for your treatments to be consumed by your anus then?

I love giving blood, go and get drunk afterwards it's good fun. ;D

I've given several times, learned quickly how important it is to eat a hardy meal before hand though. Passing out is one thing, having a 330lbs+ guy go berserk because he thinks he's dieing is another... it's crazy when you feel all whoozy and kinda pumped up at the same time, all while a red blizzard fills your eyes as you loose vision and you feel cold and just all around feel like your life is being pulled from your body, you loose all ability to keep your cool.

Happened to me three times, eventually I figured out the proper foods to eat before going in. Still looking for a plasma donation center NEARBY so I can actually get money from it, though that stuff generally goes to science and not a person to save their life, directly at least.

Man up... your saving a life. I hate needles and used to be near passing out at the sight of blood. I've given blood more times than I can remember.
