View Full Version : Shower in the basement?

I have a 35 year old split-level home. My basement is partially finished into living space, and it contains a laundry room and adjacent half bath. I would like to add a shower to this half bath, but I can't find any information out there that describes how this can be done. I'm relatively flexible with the floorplan, so the walls aren't a problem, as far as I'm concerned the main issue is going to be the shower drain (I'm pretty sure piping in the water source from the bathroom's sink won't be an issue, but please correct me if I'm wrong here). Does anyone have experience or advice on this project?

no advice, but I can say that having a shower in the basement is pretty cool

I checked with my son in law( he's a plumber) and he said n/p with connecting it with the sink drain. But if you have a concrete floor you'll have to cut into it to lay the pipe for the drain.

Thanks for checking! That really doesn't sound too bad. I will have to look and see where the sink drain is located. I know that it protrudes through the wall into the laundry room somehow, but I don't know where it drains into the floor. I will inspect a bit, maybe take some pictures, and post back here.

Thanks DogDragon! :D

And thanks for the blessing on my project, prime!

Oh he said there are other ways too, But he needs more info than what you gave Like where the floor drain is washer drain is what the layout looks like.
Than he can tell you more if he knew what you're dealing with.

Call a plumber and have him come look at it. That's the only sure way to know if its possible and what it may cost. This isn't a DIY job.

Well, I just built a new bathroom in the basement last year. I had to build a raised floor then ran some PVC at a suttle decline to the scrub sink. Just T'd in at the sink. Works great. If you can find it try using Aquapex tubing. It's way easier then sweating copper pipe. Some may say it won't last but there full of crap. Plumbers say that because it will most likely cut into there bread and butter.

Other suggestions.

1) Have shut-offs at the sink/shower/toilet supply lines.
2) Use braided hose for the sink. The plastic could split if there is presure surg.
3) when you get the tub, measure first...I didn't and almost got the tub stuck in my stair way.
4)If you have threaded connections, use pipe dope compound if you not planning on undoing the connection.

If your handy, know how to drywall, put up walls, solder pipe, and glue PVC, then this job is a DIY. If you don't you will spend a lot of money learning...but if you don't ever try to do something. You'll never learn anything.

Have fun.

I personally like sweated copper joints better myself, though I find it easy to do it, though I've seen some people who couldn't. I have been helping a friends parents run pex plumbing and I actually like it, its a little more expensive, but a hell of a lot easier to run than copper. Its a little more flexible, so that makes running it through studs a cinch.
