AGP Video Cards for FAH?

Has anyone tried folding on an AGP card?

Around $200 and I could use an older Athlon machine but have a lot more output from it. Was wondering if the CPU could keep it busy enough and it would run at full potential like it was in a PCI-E slot.

I have not tried but I have seen people folding with that graphics card. Just google for "agp" and "folding", and follow the first link :) But if I were you, I would upgrade that Athlon machine for ~$200 with a dual-core processor and probably get equal or better PPD. See below.

Na I think the vid card would get more PPD. Or I could just sell all my K7 type stuff and get 2-3 C2D systems.

I got one of my NF7s up today with watercooling. Does 2.4GHz+ on air at stock voltages (one the brilliant TbredB DLT3Cs from way back when). With one of those GPUs I could do more than my 1.6P-M and 2.2GHz K8 combined with parts I already have.

There isnt much of a difference, if any, between PCI-E and AGP versions of the same card. At 2.4GHz the Tbred should be able to keep it moving, someone did a test and lost minimal PPD by cutting a K8 down to 1.4GHz.

That along with the Tbred and swapping out a 939 3200+ for a Opteron 165 should help my PPD quite a bit.

Na I think the vid card would get more PPD.No, I'm sure you are wrong. At today's point allocations, I believe dual core CPUs on Windows SMP are ahead of GPU Folding. Marc, even with these inefficient (but overclocked) Presler core D9XX CPUs, I'm averaging about 1000 PPD each with them! My T2400 laptop, 1.83GHz C2d is averaging 750-800 PPD.

Another factor to consider is a C2D processor will use a lot less power than a high performance video card. More points for less power consumption. If you need the video card for improved gaming, well then, that's another issue.

Look at the SS he attached. No way that motherboard is going to OC worth a damn. A Biostar microATX with onboard Video. I doubt it has the options to run RAM async since the RAM probably will not OC very much either.

If I were to get a C2D system it would have to be a complete upgrade and then I might as well make it my main computer. I still have quite a bit of K7 hardware laying around that isnt doing anything. Its not going to sell for much so I was thinking the best way to make use of it is with AGP folding.

Say I got 2 AGP cards at 500PPD (on the low side) that would equal 1 of your machines for a much lower cost to me since I all I would need is a video card.

$200 for the K7 or sell all of it and go with a C2D, motherboard, 2gb of very OCable Micron Ram, and video card. How much does a C2D system do at around 3ghz+? And will SMP points stay the same?

Maybe I am just reluctant to let go off all of this hardware for so cheap.

Biostar Tforce 6100 is possibly the best overclocking MATX available for socket 939 and AM2.

And, Leo is absolutely right. I do not run GPU folding on my sig1 machine although X1950XT is faster than X1950Pro. Because dual-core Opteron is more efficient.
