when i try to run two instances of FAH 5.04 as services (by selecting yes when asked run as a service when i first run it) it only decides to run one
two instances show up in task manager but while one is using 99 of my resources the other is using zero
i have a p4 with hyperthreading and i have always run two instances of folding at home because it works really well like that
why is it being stubborn?

Don't know what is causing your problem. A workaround though, would be to not install them as services, but as programs that start with links in your Windows "Startup" folder. Use TrayIt to move the minimized client windows to the task tray. TrayIt is an outstanding little applet that works perfectly.

i do use trayit as it goes
i agree, very handy
im sure i tried adding them to the startup menu and had the same problem
very annoying as i just checked my work rate and its dropped off alot :(

Did you assign different machineID's to each thru the config?

i think i figured it out
i opened the client.cfg file with notepad and changed the machine id on one instance to 2 instead of one
is this correct?

Yeah that's how I do it ...make sure one is 1 and the other 2. They could actually be anything from 1-8 as long as they're different.
To change thru the config setup all you had to do was go into the advanced changes and it's the last question asked.
Have you restarted and is everything ok?

havent restarted yet
things seem to make more sense in task manager now
there are two seperate image names showing up for core and two for console
before there was two core i believe and only one console
i will try restart now and see what happens

If your current scheme does not work, just select 'NO' for the service optionin the config. Just let the consoles start with a shortcut .exe in the Startup file. Then use TrayIt to minimize the console windows to the Task Tray. Ensure that "Machine ID" for each console is different.

That sounds good.

is this correct? It is not a standard text file editing it using notepad etc is very dodgy it can cause lots of problems to alter config it is recommended to use the -config flag etc.

I don't know about you guys, but F@H is using 50% of each CPU on my rig

What are the motherboard and CPU particulars?

Then you are OK. Each core on your CPU should show 50% usage when Folding, if you are running two instances of the client (not SMP).

No, I'm just running one instance of the client.

No, I'm just running one instance of the client.
Then it is running properly like Leo said. If you run only one instance on a dual-core machine, only one core of resource is assigned. If you are using a Windows OS, by default it will distribute that resource over both cores to keep from stressing one side of the CPU. When it does this it looks like about 50% of both cores are being used.

Ah, ok. Now I understand.

to get it using all your available resources do what i did
run two instances and make sure they have different machine id's
i saw a jump in productivity when i did this

LOL, then, just because of that, I'll run two instances of F@H on my computer.
Also, why does the SMP client get this error:
[22:54:05] CoreStatus = FFFFFFFF (-1)
[22:54:05] Client-core communications error: ERROR 0xffffffff
and nothing else?
