View Full Version : my paranoia with "O20 - Winlogon Notify"

Hi there,

I am afraid I've been browsing some rather disrespectable areas of the internet and after that I did a HJT scan. In the log I find a line that strikes me as suspicious, so I google it and find that my fear has some backing. The line starts with O20 - Winlogon Notify and the alarm stems from a thread (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42651) (I can only access this link if I am not logged in) of this very forum. I followed the instructions, but still I'd like your opinion about it. I am posting my HJT log later on.

My look2me-destroyer log:

Look2Me-Destroyer V1.0.12

Scanning for infected files.....
Scan started at 13/5/2007 6:46:02 μμ

Attempting to delete infected files...

Making registry repairs.

Restoring Windows certificates.

Replaced hosts file with default windows hosts file

Restoring SeDebugPrivilege for Administrators - Succeeded

strangely while I run the program, there was no indication if some malware was found or removed. It just scanned my pc and then "healed" it, but of what it never mentioned.

Hi fontas-x and welcome to Short-Media. I'm checking your log, so please be patient.

fontas-x
13 May 2007, 5:26pm
1. Is the line starting with O20 - Winlogon Notify supposed to be there if everything is okay?

2. Is now everything okay?

3. I am using Firefox 2.0.0.3 (never IE) with adblock and adblock filter g always up to date. The same for my Java and Win XP SP2; and AVG A/V and A/spyware both 7.5 free edition and daily up to date. I regularly purge everything - checking every available option I mean - using ATF cleaner and through Firefox's "Clear Private data", where the only thing I don't clean/purge is to remove Saved Passwords.
Therefore, the only things that could be at risk if I've caught some malware is the Saved Passwords I allow Firefox to remember and perhaps the passwords I type each time I log in to the Google talk and MSN chat programs (they remember my username, but not my password, I type it every time I log in).

To conclude are these passwords (the ones that Firefox "remembers" and those I type while logging in in google talk and MSN) in danger? Should I change them?

Christ, I just noticed the quote in the link I posted at the top of the page, that we are advised to not use that tool... how stupid of me.

And another thing, I didn't notice any particular symptoms, it was merely a "hunch" of me, after the ill choices I did while web surfing and finding that particular line (O20 - Winlogon Notify [...])

Oh and something slightly weird I noticed: after running dss.exe, I found a new version of the Hijackthis.exe file on my desktop renamed as GusNukem.exe; GusNukem is the username that is being used every time windows start on this pc. Is this ok?

Thanks for your time and for putting up with me.

And if I am infected by something, is it safe to use and store my passwords in Firefox? What about when I type them to log in in google talk and MSN?

:) Hi fontas-x

"GusNukem" is okay
Please do the following...

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe) (by S!Ri)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I added the most recent HJT log, run just after the Smitfraudfix scan.

1. By the way, is this computer infected by something? By what? What type of malware is it?

2. This malware - where did I catch it? By installing something, in that case what? Simply by browsing the wrong places with Firefox?

3. And most importantly, about the passwords stored in firefox and those I type for logging in gmail, google talk and windows live messenger - are they in danger?

:) Hi fontas-x
1 Smitfraud
2 browsing the wrong places
3 Njet

Please do the following..

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Post C:\rapport.txt;)

Some questions if I may...

1. what does Smitfraud do and how do you suppose I got infected by it?

2. the same question for Njet.

3. in the end, AVF antispyware detected and cleaned, what? A cookie in firefox? How can that be, since I purge cookies and firefox cache all the time (literally, many times every day, especially since I started this thread) using both the simple option found in firefox itself and ATF-cleaner. I had done so many times before I used AVF A/S.

4. Were my usernames and passwords stored and typed in this computer in danger?

5. Are they now? Furthermore, I need to use to credit card to buy something online - is it safe to do so?

6. What should I avoid to do in the future, to avoid these kind of problems?

:) Hi fontas-x
your comp looks clean

1 Smitfraud infection (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51142)
2 No
3 Cookies are not dangerous so there should not be any worries
4 No
5 Yes

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/)- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)- Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)- Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
IE-SpyAd (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)- puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
CleanUP! (http://cleanup.stevengould.org/) - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
Windows Updates (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
Trillian or Miranda-IM (http://www.trillian.cc/)- These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?autocom=custom&page=How_did_I)article by Tony Klei
Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself. If you insist on using a P2P program, please read This Article (http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/)written by Mike Healan of Spywareinfo.com fame. It is an updated and comprehensive article that gives in-depth detail about which P2P programs are "safe" to use.

Happy surfing and stay clean!

1. About the Smitfraud infection: it's strange since I didn't have any of these (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51142) symptoms.

2. I added the most recent HJT log, run just after the Smitfraudfix scan.
1. By the way, is this computer infected by something? By what? What type of malware is it?
2. This malware - where did I catch it? By installing something, in that case what? Simply by browsing the wrong places with Firefox?
3. And most importantly, about the passwords stored in firefox and those I type for logging in gmail, google talk and windows live messenger - are they in danger?Hi fontas-x
1 Smitfraud
2 browsing the wrong places
3 Njet
By Njet, you meant something like nyet, the russian word for "no" ? Duh! I thought it was the name of some malware I had.

In any case, thank you very much for your time and patience with this matter.
