View Full Version : Geforce 4 MX 440SE or Geforce 2 GTS?

I have an older pc with a Hercules Geforce 2 GTS. I would like to upgrade the graphics card a bit but don't won't too spend much since it's my secondary pc. Will I notice a big difference if I get the Albatron Geforce 4 MX 440SE. I noticed it's only $50 at Newegg. The memory clock is only listed as 200, I can't remember my gf2 clock speeds off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure the memory clock is higher than 200. Can anyone tell me if the GF4MX will actually be noticeably faster? Think it might be able to run UT2003 at medium setting so I can get some network games going?

I'd stick with the geforce 2 or else buy a cheap gf4ti4200.

As much as I hate Tom's Hardware, you gotta love their charts of 30+ video cards. http://www17.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030120/vgacharts-02.html
Despite being called a Geforce 4, the MX line is based on Geforce 2 technology, with slighly more preformace (about 5% in most of the charts in the link.) I would say it is a waste of 50 bucks.

Ditto - they both have the same level of peformance.
Avoid all GFx-MX type cards. Nvidia makes them for suckers.
Either keep your money or get a DX8 (GF3 or GF4 or Radeon 8500/9100) or aDX9 (ATI Radeon 9500/9600 or GF-FX 5600 or higher card) capable card.

What's the deal with the Geforce FX 5200? I see one with a couple good reviews at Newegg for only $75. It's the VGA CHAINTECH Geforce FX 5200 128MB DDR. 8x AGP ,128 megs DDR, and for the most part DX9 compatible. Is this a good upgrade from the geforce 2 or is it just the mx of the fx series?

Ok so no sub $100 graphics card upgrade for me. No smooth running UT2k3 network play for my friends. I'll just move my 4600 over to my old comp when I upgrade in half a year or so.
Thanks for the help guys.
Edit: I made this thread by accident it was supposed to be a new reply to my other thread, and now I can't delete it. Sorry for the confusion.

That sucks man. Maybe you can gather up some money to get your upgrade on the way, if not just means you get a even better upgrade in the future.

yeah, just wait till some of the newer cards come out, and move the 4600 in your current computer down to the back up and toss the new card in to your current computer . . .

The Ti4600 is in my main system. I was just wondering if I could get a cheap (below $100) card to replace the Geforce 2 GTS in my old system. Doesn't look like anything in that pricerange would do enough of a difference to make it worthwhile though.

ya that geforce2 gts is good for now you should look in to overclocking to save some money. if you overclock you could get like another 10-50 FPS in ut2003

i got a Geforce4 MX 440 and it runs UT2K3 just fine

if you get the MX440 with 8x agp you can run it at 400/800 with no voltage mods. iv had the mx440 with 8x agp and i can say that most of them are running at 370/750 with no mods.

but he was looking for sub-$100 cards I thought... the 9500 is more than $100... at any rate, newegg has refurbed 128mb non-le 8500s for $90... I may buy one...

actually the initial question was about the mx440, then sleepstalker asked about the fx5200... for less than $100, the only decent cards you'll find are refurbished or used, unless new 128mb ti4200s are less than $100 now... all the FXs are worthless, and the 5200 is the worst of the lot. The GeForce MXs have never exactly been blazingly fast cards either... and ATi doesn't have anything out for less than $100 that's better than the 8500 anyhow... so, his best bet for a graphics card upgrade would be to either wait, as he said, or get a used 8500, or possibly a new 9000/9100... there's nothing else in that price range that's as fast as they are.

Screw getting either of those cards. Just give into your temptation of getting an ATI 9800Pro. You know you want to....

I'm not buying another major graphics card until Doom 3 comes out. Once Doom 3 comes out I'll probably buy whatever card runs it best. I sure hope Nvidia wins, I've been using Nvidia ever since 3Dfx died. I have faith that they will make a comeback and reclaim the the crown as graphics king.

I was the same way. My first 3d card was a Voodoo2 with 12MB of RAM. I also had the Voodoo3 and 5, after 3dfx went under it was a bitch to get drivers. Since then I have liked ATI better as a company, though that really does not effect my purchases (my first card after 3dfx went down was a Geforce 3.)

I remember back when I was looking for my first 3D graphics card I ended up getting Diamond Banshee 16MB glorious piece of hardware too bad the drivers were spotty. Then I saw ATI Rage Fury which was so cool. Then the Rage Fury Pro came out and it had a fan on it. Now that was cool!!! Then the Rage Fury Maxx with two GPUs  !!! Once I read an article in my PC Gamer way back when with 3dfx's new line up I knew I had to get a hold of one of those cards. Too bad it went under cause I prolly would have had it. Alas I stuck with ATI ever since I got into bed with them...lol. Got me my Radeon 9500Pro. Just loving it...
