hi,
i am using a windows 2000 pro computer with computer name as steve
recently i found a a steve$ folder under C:\Documents and Settings\ folder of my computer.
does anyone know what this is?
is my computer being hacked?

That is where many settings and system files specific to that profile go. Nothing to worry about.

its not a hidden folder but a folder named as steve$ under C:\Documents and Settings\ as i have posted.

If you go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Managment > Local Users and Groups > Users
Does it list Steve$ in the list of users?

do you have some messenging proggy or other program that you log into as steve? I find that sometimes I'll find folders with my various usernames in that docs and settings folder. now with the files you've found in that steve$ folder, it appears that there is a user named steve using that computer. BTW, I believe $ signifies a hidden share. try this, on another computer on your lan, see if you can open \\steve\steve$

Right click and see how many files are in there.
Leave it a day or 2 and see if it has changed, if not, delete it. Still, it may have been some sort of exploit, make sure you download everything @ Windows update(.com)
