View Full Version : files are seen on network but cannot be accessed

ok, I have this issue. I have WINXP Pro with sp1 and all. I decided Ill password protect my computer, that way no one can go into my windows and screw around while Im not home. Well in that process of adding a password to my login, a prompt came up and asked "do you want to also make your folders and files private?" (or something like that). I accidentally said yes. Now when my brother tries to access my shared folder, he can see the contents, but cant access or copy anything over to his computer. I cant reverse this "making my files private" thing. Any one know how?

have you tried to just take the password off again. You could also make a new "shared" folder and set the permisions on that folder when its created.

As Tex suggested, each folder that was consdiered part of XP's default "shared folders" was marked private. If you right click each of those folders you should be able to manually change their permissions.

well I did try to take off the password and it still did it. I also checked to make sure the folders didnt have a check in to box to make them private. Thats why I needed help. Oh well Ill find away. Thanks for the help anyway

Just remove the share and then share ir again.

That's really not possible, unless you got more in-depth and started toying with groups and specific user access levels, or possibly enabling the built-in XP firewall (but he would even see the folders in this instance)... sharing or not sharing is easily marked at the folder level.

I will admit, however, that I've had similar issues in the past regarding access levels. Keep tinkering, worse thing that happens is you learn what NOT to do in the future :p
