If you pay your bill to AOL then you're screwed (yes, you go through their servers to authenticate and get to the internet... they go down you go down). I suggest you cancel that subscription and go with time warner or your other local cable modem company.

Other option is that you've had AOL installe din the past and its still integrated with Internet Explorer, but it will not affect your connection if AOL went down.

You should be able to just fire up Internet Explorer without having to go through AOL. It seems that you have an AOL-branded copy of IE. This is nothing more than a custom title. You could make it say "Powered by Moondawgie" if you wanted it to.

Yeah, AOL is notorious for changing the 'generic' Internet Explorer logo and title with their own. And, even if you uninstall AOL it still stays there! No worries tho.

I think this is the first tiime a thread has been moved OUT of Off Topic. :) (probably a first on any forum)

There is no free lunch. You have to pay someone for internet access. If AOL suits your purpose, so be it. If you get rid of AOL you need to get another provider.

Not being a big fan of AOL I'm not sure how your cable works through them unless your cable company is affiliated with Time Warner. Please don't tell me you are paying your cable company and AOL.

Well...this really belongs in software, but I won't move it. :)

The "powered by" is a registry entry and can be changed to say whatever you want as pointed out by TD_Isles. It doesn't mean it's actually using the AOL service to connect to the internet.

I have an IBM Thinkpad that I changed IE to say: "Powered by IBM Stinkpad".....LOL!

...unless you like them. Your Internet access is taken care of through Cablevision. AOL Broadband is merely a content service - it gives you the AOL homepage as your starting point.

Next time you go to connect to AOL and they are down, just type in another www address (like www.icrontic.com) and press "Go" (or hit "enter").

When my dad was new to computers he used AOL. It basically gave him a built-in set of shortcuts to interesting content. If you want ball scores, just go to www.espn.com, or whatever else you find that you like. Your $4.95 a month just pays for the AOL unique content - they give you a home page with links to news, sports, whatever. That's all it is.
