View Full Version : 12" Subs

I've got some 10" Rockfords in my old truck, but I don't want to leave my old truck w/ a crappy sound system so I'm thinking of purchasing some 12" subs for my truck, that way they both have sweet systems w/ some BOOM. :D

I know Infinity Kappa is supposed to be pretty good, but how would you guys compare it to Rockford? Also, I don't know anyone w/ AudioBahn, but the prices on those subs is pretty cheap which makes me think they might be sub-par quality-/performance-wise.

Also, any of you have a 2002, 2003 or 2004 Dodge Ram Quad cab or know anyone with one that has put 10s or 12s under the rear seats? I really want 12s if I can but I don't want the fit to be so tight that it's nearly impossible to install . . . I still need room for the amp.

As for the amp, I'm looking at the Rockford 1501BD, but definitely haven't ruled out other amps.

Mods/Admins: Would it be possible to create a forum for Automobile technology? Audio, Video, etc? There are a lot of car buffs on this site and this isn't the only time I've seen a thread that talks about car/truck audio. The only other place besides the pub that this thread might fit would be in the graphics and sound forum, but that just didn't seem right to me.

Check Ebay for "Alum12q"... Audiobahn subs, same thing ast he Alum12x as far as I can tell. Check Audiobahn's site for the specs. I really need to order a pair. The specs on these things are insane, and the price is even better.

A Quiznos just moved in a couple months ago. They're too small and too expensive IMO... :(

I also have a sound question..

are alpine headunits and speakers good?

Geeky1

The head units are some of the best you can get. The speakers are OK. The type r subs are supposed to be good, but their specs don't back it up.

I'd recommend an Alpine, Blaupunkt, or Kenwood head unit, and Infinity or Pioneer speakers, with Infinity, Pioneer, or Audiobahn subs. I'd stick with Alpine, Kenwood, Audiobahn, or maybe Blaupunkt or Sony for amps if you have the money for them. Profile amps are cheap and the specs look good though, so...

yeah I just got a quote for my El Camino with Alpine CDA9811 headunit, some 3 1/2" dash speakers, and some 6x9 back speakers (both alpine) for 600 doallars including installation and boxes for the back speakers.. 644 after taxes

I might get this..being the original speakers are 20 years old and shot...I'm not even going to mention the headunit in it *cough* Shaft cassette *cough*

pretty good deal if you ask me...opinions?

EDIT: sorry for the hijack a2j :)

No apologies necessary, Katze. At least it's related to audio. :)

I just got a bit tired of seeing replies in my user control panel and coming here only to find talk of food. ;D

lol

to help you out..

I think 12" subs are bit overkill for a truck...that's just me though..not a big bass person

the only company I've had good expirences with were Rockford Fosgate.. Friend of mine put two 10" ones in his Bronco with the amp you mentioned and it sounds great.

I have a single 12" Kenwood in the Durango, no amp on it and it sounds great for just a little bass.

Rot... do I have any suggestions?
Yeah... dump the alpine speakers. Get some Infinity Kappa 32.5cf fronts and some Kappa 692.5i rear speakers instead.

I have two 10" Rockford Punch HX2 subs in my Single Cab Ram and the bass is really nice in the cab, but my new truck is a Quad Cab and has about 2x the cabin space. I don't think 12s would be overkill. I think they'd be KILLER. :D

Only thing is I've never built a box before, so I think I'll have some work infront of me no matter which subs I choose.

I've never built a box before, either. However, I don't think it's too difficult. My understanding is that the denser the material used, the better. I was thinking about using 3/4" or 1" MDF, lined with dynamat for mine (eww... the stupid thing will weigh like 100lbs. There go my 0-60 times... )

BTW, I like Togo's subs, but that's just me :D

This is technical site. Anything else does into the Pub. As soon as we add an Auto forum, 20 other people will want other forums. I hope you understand from the admin point of view.

That's why I said automobile technology, not automotive. :)

alright kids, here's the deal:

for head unit, go Alpine, Panasonic, or JVC

for components, go Infinity

for subs, go Infinity, JL, or Audiobahn

as far as sub models go, the Infinity Perfect 12.1D is the only way to go, so getting 2 of those will be ideal. With JL, i'm assuming you don't have a limitless bank account, so the W7s are probably not a viable option, unless you're willing to splurge on the best bass possible, so go with a pair of W6 12s and you'll be happy. For audiobahn, go with the FlameQ 12" AW06T model. if you fully power it, you'd only need one sub as it takes like 1000 watts to give it all the juice it needs, which, believe me, will BOOM like there's no tomorrow and sound great while doing it.

for amps: JBL, Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Zapco, Audiobahn, JL, Precision Power, or Pheonix Gold.

there. now what you need to do is figure out exactly what you want as far as speaker sizes and price-range. for the sub box(es), make sure to use 3/4" MDF, as that is what professionals use.
