Omg... not again :shakehead

Another thread asking people if the parts they are going to put together are ok or if there are any other better deals.

Case: Enermax CS-10181-W (Beige/white) (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=11-124-032) $75 shipped

Memory: Buffalo Technology 512MB 6 Layer PC3700 DDR (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=20-150-541) $93 shipped

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 / 2.6CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB - RETAIL (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=19-116-159) $174 shipped

Motherboard: Abit IS7 865PE Already Have

HDD: WDJB1200 Already Have

Opticals: Sony 52x cd-rom Already Have
TDK VeloCD 52x24x48 CD-Rw Already Have

Heatsink: SLK900U Already Have

I plan on overclocking this system. With the 2.6c having a 1 day sale I figured I'd grab it while it's cheaper than a 2.4c. With a multipler of 13x I won't have to buy extremely expensive ram. I'm hoping for 3.1-3.2 on air.

Thoughts?

Some of the pentiums at tigerdirect are $90 off. Are they worth it? Or stick with AMD? Cause $90 is alot of money to take off a processor. I'll be gaming with this comp.

Ordered:
Intel Pentium 4 / 2.8CGHz 512k socket 478 Hyper Threading Technology 800 MHz FSB - RETAIL (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=19-116-161)

and

KINGSTON HyperX Series 184-pin 512MB Kit (2x 256MB) DDR466 (PC3700) DDR RAM modules, Model# KHX3700K2/512 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=20-144-129)

Realized the pc3700 buffalo was micron modules and not winbond. Then i looked around wondering what the cheapest ch5 was.

The 2.8 was $30 more so i figured what the hell 14x multipler will pwn.

The lower the multi the better with P4s. That way you can achieve higher FSBs before you chip craps out.

I plan on making a similar set up for my dad too ;) , but i think ill be getting a 2.4

EDIT//: itll probably be an athlon system now that i think of it, hows a 2500+ and a nf7-s sound?:)

Loos good to me, I didn't notice the buffalo wasn't the winbond, good catch. Looks like it will be a nice system, even though you are a traitor, haha

Did I miss it, or did you not list the videocard?

Isn't time to be making out with your GeiL ULTRA!!!!!? :P kidding

But I decided to switch back to the 2.6c because of the nice price. Also i'll be getting an slk947 u for my 1800+ system.

For the video card i'm just going to be putting in an old GF3ti200.

You need a motherboard with a late-revision i850 chipset, like an Asus P4T-533C. Now get some PC1200, and overclock the **** out of it (up to 800 FSB). Tack on a P4EE and you're all set!

Or you could go get an Athlon64 and a motherboard with a KT800.

Seriously though, get a DVD-ROM. I know my folks watch DVD's on the computer, mostly because the TV's DVD-player is weird to use.

The Abit IS7 with a hacked PAT engine is as fast or slightly faster than the Abit IC7-G which is the fastest Intel board available.

Why the hell would he go back two chipsets, to a board that doesn't support the P4C at 800MHz, and only supports PC2100?

It's PC1200, not PC2100. Because it has _insane_ memory bandwidth.

You are insane. :wtf:

Maybe i'll get some rdram so i can blow money on a technology that filed for bankrupcy. Their prices are pretty good right? Also getting an i850 chipset would definetly kick major arse with my p4 800 mhz fsb. So if i worked real hard i could get it to run at stock. Maybe a little phase change here and there.

No need to pay $25-30 for a dvd-rom when we have a dvd player in the room and a spare cd-rom sitting here doing nothing.

Thanks for the advice tho... :eek3:

-drasnor :fold:

1. It only takes PC1066/RIMM4200 on the P4T-533C.
2. It's worse than DDR.
3. It has a higher memory latency than DDR (Oh, about 10x higher).
4. It has lower bandwidth than DDR
5. The chipset alone is ~20% slower than the Springdale/Canterwood

drasnor

It's not necessarily RIMM. There's some Corsair that claims to be PC1200 that fits in non-RIMM boards. Anyway, it was a joke. I thought it was pretty funny, I guess some people need to loosen up. Words like "insane" aren't necessarily positive, and the fact that the original statement was suffixed by "Seriously, though" ought to have been a clue. Sorry.

I figured the Rambus suggestion would have been pretty obvious, you know, with that being a four-letter word around here and all.

Seriously, though, consider the DVD-ROM in place of the CD reader. They're just about the same price.

Watching a lil Super Troopers? Awesome movie.

Those boards dont have dual channel either I dont think. The 865 and 875 boards are by far the best Intel boards. They finally have enough bandwidth.

drasnor

If you're referring to the i850 boards, they have dual channel. Dual channel RAMBUS, that is. Bwahahahaha (evil intel laugh).
I happen to own one, hence my excitement over the Opteron.

have you ever run your IS-7 or is it new in box?

Al_Capown
5 Nov 2003, 1:33pm
I received the Abit IS7 in a transaction with TheBaron back in June or July. He had used it for sometime then. Ever since I received it in the summer it has been sitting in a box on my desk. Parts are slowly cummulating. Starting with an hd, psu, cd-rw, cd-rom, etc, etc.

First thing i'll be doing is updating the bios on it, since it is probably months old. Can't wait to get that PAT enabled. I'm hoping my 2.6c will overclock to at least 3.1 or 3.2. The memory should make it to 250-255.

remember how i told you the temp sensors wouldn't work with MBM? well apparently the new version added support for the specific winbond chip, and now it DOES work! yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

hey shorty, you should add RIMM and Rambus into the offensive language filter :buck:

My 2.6C runs all day every day at 3.250 and will run 95% stable (not good enough tho) at 3.4+. Still haven't found the time to stick it in the H2O rig and see if a little better cooling helps stabilize at higher clock.

My god,

I got the case today. Best $57 I've ever spent. If anyone is looking for a new system but doesn't have the money to spend on a lian li, i'd recommend this case.

Only 2 flaws of this case: It's made out of steel and no removable motherboard tray.

Definetly would recommend it to anyone. The case is very large for a "midsize ATX tower" and it's got plenty of room for fans and changing fans is as easy as a snap, unlike lian li's proprietary nonsense. If I build a new system this will be my next case.
