im visiting my mother on the east coast right now and shes having a problem with DirectX on her PC.

now, im pretty good with PC's and their "issues", but im stumped on this one.

when ever she boots up/reboots, an error comes up stating:

"Warning: It appears that the installed version of DirectX (4.09.00.0902) is newer than this version of DxDiag (4.07.00.0700). Some info reported may be inaccurate. You should use a newer version of DxDiag."

...then after i click "OK", it brings up the DxDiag box.

now..i tried overlapping it with DirectX 9.0b, but i still got this message. so i then went and got a DirectX Uninstaller, uninstalled DirectX, then installed 9.0b again, but STILL got this error.

what else can i try?

thanx for any help!

-Sin

PS. Her PC stats are:

P2 350MHz
128 PC100 Ram
20 gig 7200rpm Hard Drive
Voodoo 3 3000 video card
Sound Blaster 128 sound card

Search the registry for dxdiag keys, remove any listed in any startup/runonce/run folders... this is assuming it's something loaded into startup, maybe after an initial reboot following a DX install/update or after the install/uninstall of an application that required dx.

If the PC works fine otherwise and is only causing this silly error, it's a quirk I've never seen...

I am sure its something the PC is trying to load at startup

Click Start/run/msconfig (go to startup tab)

and disable the most likely culprits one at a time and see if that helps?

Ah another DX 9.0 issue. If your mom is on 98/98SE or ME, install DX v8.1b and you'll have less hassles. IMHO

Remember you cant roll back.

But as was already said, DX normally inserts a startup command into the registry but it should only execute once.

http://atomnet.co.uk/?p=programs&search=start - Is also a very useful program (like MSConfig but easier to use and less other issues).

Yes as a more than general rule you can't uninstall DX but I've heard nothing but good with DXUninstaller lately. However that is for all DX8 and below flavors. I understand DX9 is a bit more difficult to uninstall with the prog.
