My 14 yearold daughter likes horrible rap crap in general. This is not music to me. I love Rock.

On vacation she begs us to play a new CD she got from her older cool brother up in Seattle. Its White Stripe. I had never heard of them. I loved the Cd's! (grin) They were great!

She had two and is so depressed we like them she gave them both to me......

I love to torture my kids. Nothing worse when your 14 then..... for dad to love your new cool CD.

yeah, i am sure he means the white stripes, and they are fantastic. the main guitarist, jack white i think he goes by, is really fantastic. its very refreshing to have a new band that actually has somewhat of an understanding of making music . . .

No its not rap at all. I was thrilled she was broadening her interests. I like hard rock or at least stuff more in the rock and roll genre. I evenb thought they sounded a little like the Violent Femmes at times.

The rap stuff I hate is 5 black guys or white guys with pants off their ass and hats on sideways chanting with no music... wearing 100,000 worth of gold jewalry telling me how bad they have it in the hood while they drive Hummers..... and talking about shooting cops and gang banging women etc...

Thats rap music to me.

Tex, have I ever told ya I love you :D . I can't stand rap, I don't even dare to call it music. It is all the same, unoriginal, "Look at me, I live in the ghetto, I fight in gang wars, I sell drugs, I am a pimp," crap. And like you said, these people do not live those lives. Perhaps at one time they did, but when you are living in Beverly Hills with 3 Beemers in the drive way and 100's of girls chasing you, you are not living a hard life.

The genre itself is not music. 98% of all rap involves between one and four guys with deep and/or grainy voices talking (not singing) to a three beat rythm (done by a machine noless.) Oh, and I almost forgot the one guy who always seems to be in the background yelling thinks like "YEA." I don't know if there ever was a time when rap was good, but as time goes on it only seems to get worse.

Tool is more progressive then metal or straight rock... hell, they opened for King Crimson a few tours ago... that says a lot as King Crimson is a very well respected Progressive band that usually doesn't have any opening act (and they even invited Carey to join in on the drums for a song/two :D ).

Tool started almost punk, tried being "hard" on the rock spectrum but not falling too far off into the metal zone... then became intelligent metal, but finally found their pace of progression on lateralus. I think most people find tool 'hard' or 'metal' is because of the crunchy guitar and depressing/dark feel to their entire image (videos, concerts, and music). But their music can hardly be compared to the Pantera and Metallica houses of metal. hell, Rage Against the Machine's brand of intense/fast paced rock was more 'metal' than tool, but I never heard their millions of fans rushing to push them into that category...

I hate categories anyway, but if we insist on using them then let's use them right :).

i never really got into tool as much as some other folks, they are fine i guess, i really like some of their videos, i think stinkfist has to be one of the coolest of all time. and on that note, i am a big fan of a perfect circle, i really like how they turned out. typically, side projects dont turn out all that well, by maynard (sp?) did a good job with this one. AND, if you havent heard their latest cd, thirteenth step, it awesome. its really really good, you can tell they have matured a lot. Although, for those expecting judith, much of the album is much more 3librasesque. thats a word. i swear.

and someone had to bring up rage against the machine. they will always have a special place in my heart. i still think tom morello is one of the best guitarists in the biz. oh well, such is life, bands break up.

the next type of music that is on my hate list at the moment is goth type bands. not like, bands that wear black, or bands that have makeup or whatever. but bands that like, think its still cool to have like upside down crosses, and pentagrams and say stuff like "i worship the devil" i honestly cant understand how anyone takes those guys seriously. they just make me laugh, they are literally no-talent a$$-clowns, and being into that stuff is like, eighth grade, all over again. i just feel like they never got out of junior high. phew, enough of that rant. anyway, if you want some good laughs, go check out this guy Mortiis. seriously, if he could see himself . . .

anyway, enough from me . . .
