So I did a search, and i didnt see anything along the lines of a movie thread, but i think i remember something like this at the old icrontic, so i thought i would bring it back up . . .

anybody seen any good movies lately?

The latest couple of movies i have seen includes one movie called cypher. I think its french and its about corporate espionage. its pretty cool, but kinda gets a little out of hand towards the end. i also saw underworld, the order, and lost in translation in the theatre recently. underworld was . . . ok. like, the story was cool, and some of the SFX were pretty cool, but there is this one part where this guy gets cut on his face, and i swear, it takes like 8 and a half minutes for his face to slide off. its just seems real typical. i actually liked the order a good deal better than all the critics rated it. wasnt best movie of the year or anything, but it was pretty good. lost in translation was also halfway decent, but i got pretty bored during it, and i usually dont get bored during movies. there was this one part, where the two main characters are at this karaoke thing, and the whole scene just went on for a ridiculous amount of time. and they werent even singing any songs that anyone knew. just kinda dull. oh well . . .

so if anybody has seen these movies lately or has seen any good ones of your own, go ahead and post them here :D . . .

I feel I must warn everyone about Dreamcatcher. I saw that movie a couple nights ago and have suffered severe psychological damage. I almost didn't watch the whole movie and in retrospect I shouldn't have watched the whole movie. Be afraid, very afraid of GI JOE morgan freeman, and the rest of the bad casting. Several good actors in very bad roles.

yeah, i never saw dreamcatcher, and i remember i wanted to when it was in theatres only because i wanted to see the flight of the osiris (from the animatrix) and dreamcatcher was the only movie that it was showing before. but other than that, i have heard that it is pitifully awful . . .

Best recently viewed movie was "About Schmidt" (Nicholson's last flick). Semi-passionate flick with some very tense/odd scenes, starring real charatcers (for a change) in a not-so-far-fetched storyline. And it was awkwardly funny at times too. ;)

A close second was "The Pianist", another holocaust movie but showed a lot of the life in the ghetto, and a side of the jews fighting back I have yet to see much of in holocaust movies.

Saw "Spun" (drug movie, not the greatest but well acted).

Haven't been to the theaters since Matrix 2, which I enjoyed minus the first 15-20 minutes...

Finally saw "Catch Me If You Can" (Spielberg, Decraprio flick). Definitely fun to watch but didn't leave much of a lasting impression (I like movies that stir me for a few hours/days after ;) ).

man, i heard a bunch of good movies mentioned in there, and yes, i am all kinds of excited about kill bill. its gonna be freakin awesome. i think i read a quote from lucy liu (who is one of the stars in kill bill) and she said something like "this is going to be the most violent movie ever made" and then i read another quote from quentin himself saying "its not the number of people you kill that counts, but how cool you do it". so, i am definitely excited about that one.

and big lebowski (you do not f*ck with the jesus) and o brother are great cohen brothers movies. i have actually been meaning to see some of their earlier stuff (blood simple, millers crossing) and if you liked those two that citrix mentioned, be sure to check out fargo if you havent seen it already. one of the most classic endings to a movie that you will never forget. pretty funny too.

i really liked about schmidt and the pianist. even though roman polanski may be a little twisted (the whole 15 year old girl thing) it might not be all his fault (the manson cult killing his family thing), and he can sure make a helluva movie. adrien brody was absolutely fantastic in it also. really good movie.

a friend recommended spun to me, and i havent seen it yet, but he said some of the filming techniques are really really great and its kind of a cross between go (from the director of swingers) and requiem for a dream (if you havent seen this, you absolutely must). anyway, thats all i got to say . . .

another movie that i saw recently that i forgot to mention was dirty, pretty things (with audry tatou from amelie). its a british flick, but it was really really good. i enjoyed it, but its prolly not for everyone.

and kill bill came out today, and of course, i saw it, and it was awesome. it totally rocked. it was good stuff. and i am gonna agree with lucy, it probably IS the most violent movie ever made. lots of dismemberment, spraying blood, decapitations, etc. and its good in a quentin tarantino sort of way. i didnt even like pulp fiction all that much, but LOVED reservoir dogs. so, i am not like a quentin nut or anything, but kill bill was great, go see it . . .

Spun is no requiem for a dream. Aronofsky is a genius IMO, whoever did Spun is a poser, but a good poser.

well, thats kinda what i meant. Aronofsky IS a genius, and i think that every kid in high school should have to see requiem for a dream. there are images in that movie that...just never go away. and i still havent seen spun yet. i will prolly get around to it.

btw stoopid, i imagine you have seen Pi (also by aronofsky), what did you think of it?

Highly original and really interesting considering how 'low budget' it obviously is... won the sundance award, which peaked my interest. Think I even saw it at the local 'artsy' theater (seen a lot of good movies there, need to catch American Splendor soon).

BTW, just finished watching Identity, and although I won't ever watch it again (one of those movies that the surprise ending says it all) I really did enjoy it, and yes it had me on the edge of my seat. It's hard to make a good thriller nowadays without being cliched, and Identity manages to pull it off and even leave a mark of its own.

for the most part, i liked identity. i dunno though something about the ending just rubbed me wrong. not sure what it was.

yeah, and dont know if you heard about it, but for a long while darren aronofsky (is it daron?) was werking on a high-budget sci-fi with brad pitt as the lead. i could only imagine where that was going, but unfortunately, i heard it was scrapped, but supposedly all that long hair and full beard that mr pitt had for a while was for this movie. oh well . . .

It doesn't sound familiar... I know he was working on something but heven't heard anything since... could be the reason why.

Hollywood's odd like that. My friend works with the producer for the Guy Richie films and says that a recent Richie movie was scrapped when the lead actor they wanted wasn't available... I mean, they can't find someone else? Really...

yeah, that is kinda ridiculous, but i do know that sometimes writers write screenplays specifically for a certain actor, but i cant really imagine that they couldnt just find someone else. oh well . . .

ok, so a little update is due in this thread. I have seen several movies recently. to start off with, i saw the new texas chainsaw massacre, and it was really great. i liked it much more than a lot of some of the critics did. I thought it was done very well and still retained a lot of the shock factor that was first captured in the first one. i also thought it was funny that harry knowles head was in leatherface's basement. if you dont know who he is, dont worry about it, he's a loser . . .

at a recent lan party i also saw spun (which we had mentioned earlier in this thread) and undead. spun was pretty good i spose, definitely no requiem, but it was certainly entertaining. and as for undead, there are no words. it is literally the funniest, horrible B movie i have ever seen. its an independant aussie flick that if not made for comedic purposes, that was certainly the way it came off. horrible acting, horrible cinematography, and i loved it. like some directors make scenes and they just come off as being stupid or silly, and they just couldnt tell at the time...or something. but undead, you honestly want to ask the director if they were serious, because it is so awful. anyway, its supposed to be a horror flick (i think) but its hilarious to watch if you dont have too many movies in your queue (not a queue in the P2P sense of the word :D ).

i also saw irreversible with monica bellucci. It was graphic and intense to say the least, but i think it really captures the brutality and horror involved with rape. graphic, but good. its italian, btw.

finally, the last movie i saw recently was oliver stone's jfk. i had never seen this before, but always wanted to. its really more of a case study into jim garrison's (the louisiana DA) pursuit of the truth in the Kennedy assassination. It was totally phenomenal. i suppose compared to a lot of my peers here at icrontic, i am a bit of a yungin, but i was not alive for the murders of jfk, rfk, or mlk junior, but i cannot fathom what living through those tumultuous times must have been like. and in talking with my father, who was a freshman in college during the jfk assassination, he feels like conspiracy was simply not something that was considered back then. and as for my generation, i feel like there is simpley not enough awareness into the situation and the events that occurred. anyway, i wont go on too much more, unless some folks would like to discuss some more of the facts and fictions involved with that case (The Official John F Kennedy Assassination Conspiracy Thread perhaps?), but whether you buy into it or not, the cinematography was superb as was the performance by Kevin Costner. I think it won the Academy's Best Picture, but ritalin-consumers beware, it IS a 3 and a half hour movie. anyway, thats all my updates for now . . .

Well I'll add Matrix Revolutions; I love it personally. Not sure what's up with the critics, I can't think of ANY way I would rather see it end. My only complaint is they spent a bit too much time on the story and didn't get into the characters enough for me.

Oh man, i totally forgot that one. I saw revolutions when it came out and I also really really liked it and also have no clue what is up with the critics. I loved the first one, as did the rest of the population, I was slightly disappointed with the second one, but certainly not pissed off, but I thought the third one was great. The two biggest complaints I hear are "I hated the ending" and "There were too many holes and questions that were not wrapped up." Again, I whole-heartedly disagree. I found that everything was wrapped up very nicely.

EDIT:\\ after i wrote this, i noticed all the capitalizations and periods and i realized that this post was under the influence of "writing-a-review" syndrome. so, sorry for all the proper punctuation and stuff . . .

so this weekend i saw the missing with cate blanchett and tommy lee jones. the preview was pretty awful for this movie i thought, so i wasnt really expecting much. but it was a lot better than i thought. i really enjoyed it. if you got the time and the money, go check it out.

ps. its not really a ghost/scary/horror movie like the preview makes it out to be.

It's a French movie. Monica Bellucci is an Italian actress but the movie was made in France. And I must say it was a quite good, though very graphic. It hurt my eyes but you're not supposed to look at the screen the whole time anyway. The director wanted people to look away, which explains the crazy camera work.

And everyone should see Battle Royale. It's a Japanese flick so I hope you like subtitles. Dubbing sucks! It was one of Quentin Tarantino's inspiriations for Kill Bill, which was ultimately awesome.

I was pretty disappointed by Matrix Revolutions; I thought the action was really drawn out. But I wasn't totally put off by the film.

And The Cat in the Hat SUCKS! Good thing I didn't pay to see it...that's how sad my life is. Watching the Cat and the Hat was a pure waste of time and killed atleast 1395 brain cells.
