lo everyone, can anyone tell me what this annoying problem means?

i install office XP and it runs fine... then every once in a while i try and type into either excel or word and at the bottom of the screen it says "command not available because the document is locked for edit".

This isnt to do with the cell protection in Excel..
The task bars in office are all blacked out too so i cant click any of them :(

well, when i see that error is here at work. we have spreadsheets that we have to keep updated constantly, and when the file is "locked for edit" it typically means that someone else has the file open from our shared network drive. so maybe it is opened elsewhere, either from another user or by another program . . .

hmm even when starting a new file it is "locked for edit " and a simple reboot wont fix it :(

Can you still create new documents?

I had this happen to me, and it turned out to be a problem with the microsoft activation wizard. Apparently, if you don't complete the evil thing, eventually all the microsoft programs don't let you do anything, all you get is the "document locked for edit" error message.

Worked for me anyway.

yeah thats what it was, the activation thing.
got it sorted now tho....
i think office has a 60 day trial timer on it by default or somethin like that until you register it
