Wireless speed

I can see under less than ideal signals, a wireless B system will drop down from 11Mbps to anywhere from 2-5Mbps.
My question is with a G wireless system, if it is 54Mbps (ideal signal), would the drop down be in the low 20s Mbps?

In theory it should be like that, but there's no gaurentee. In my experience, I have 54g in my house my computer in the basement picks up at around 2mbps :~( But using an 11b wireless device it'll pick up 11mbps.

Hmmmm Bacwards as I thought from what it should be. Considering if the extra $50 is worth for the 54g outlay?

if its just for internet browsing, then no. but if there is going to be file transfers between computers (and big files at that) then i would say go with the 54G. but thats just my opinion . . .

I have 1 PC hardwired, 2 PC's wireless and my iBook is also wireless. I love the freedom of wireless. I was able to put one machine in one of our guest bedrooms for people to use when they stay with is. Now they don't bug me to use my machine. :)

The second wireless PC is for my wife in her office. Not having to run wires throughout the house has really been nice. I don't do a lot of file movement between the machines, so wireless was the best way to go. Only 1 machine is .g capable (so is the Netgear router) and the speed is much better, but nowhere near the claims of .g.

type g has network speed of 108 mbps...with a firmware upgrade

In the setups i have tested 802.11b seems to max out around 3-4mbit (384-512kbyte/s) and 802.11a appears to get about 18mbit (2mbyte/s). So if you need speed id go with a, but g would probably work as well and is supposed to have a longer range, but g runs @ 2.4Ghz versus the 5Ghz that a runs at. Higher doesnt mean better, but the 5Ghz spectrum has MUCH less interference than the 2.4Ghz spectrum and it may be better if you have alot of said interference. Im really not sure about g i have yet to had the pleasure of using it.
