Yes i'm stupid, i admit it, but what exactly is folding? Citrix's sticky is not working for me. I know its for a good cause, but what else? What and how does the scoring thing work?

GnomeWizardd
12 Mar 2004, 1:22am
scoring is just to make it semi competitive. ITs putting proteins under stress to figure what causes disease stuff. We are trying to find cures for stuff so we can be cured when we get old

Ok, I downloaded the thing from the site that has the display of the proteins and puts a thing next to the clock. I also got the only-text one. Are these essentially the same? Do I only have to use the text-only one? What exactly does changing the name to "-forceasm -forceSSE -advmethods -local -verbosity 9" do?

oops, I think this thread is in the wrong section.

GnomeWizardd

lol its all good. Use -advmethods and -forcesse USes your cpu to the fullest Make sure you use your username and for team put in 33693

yagga
12 Mar 2004, 2:21am
I used a different name, but a.k.a.'d it with yagga, if i am not mistakin this should work.

Yeah, I think before I renamed it it used exactly 50% of my cpu, sometimes a hair over. Now it uses 100%.

I only need to have the text-only one open then? No other folding software necessary.

How long does it take to get scoring? I know I am pretty late on starting this. Or rather, how long does it take to get so many points? A rough estimate.

soon as you finish a WU it should post took me 1 week for 450 points but thats a A64 depends on your CPU

yagga
12 Mar 2004, 2:58am
yeah, i got 2, one P4 HT 2.8, and one duron 1300, once a wu finishes will a new one automatically begin?

GnomeWizardd
12 Mar 2004, 3:03am
if your online 24/7 like a Broaband connection It will automatically send the results in and download a new WU

ya, i got this really bad itch... ok i'll stop

yagga
12 Mar 2004, 3:15am
umm, yeah, When I try to start it up I can't choose my settings, can I change this so that I can? I don't mind if it is automatic, but I atleast want to change something first. Also, if I stop in the middle of its doing, will I have to start all over?

(I hope you spotted this post after posting, I am expecting another post soon)

everything u need is in client.cfg.

u can even delete it, and run f@h again to go through the setup.

If the process is stopped while it is working, will I have to start it from scratch?

What is that screen saver thing, should I avoid it? Would I be right in guessing that it automatically starts working the program using the screensaver? And if so, in order to stop the screen saver I had to shut it down, which brings me to the first question on this post, which also makes the screen saver possibly useless (2nd question again).

If the process of folding stops in the middle , it does not require you to start over on that WU. It picks up where it left off.. =)

The screensaver is kinda hosed , but some like it , I prefer to just have the icon in the tray.. =)

Ok then. I think just one last question.

I put in 100% processor for that setting, but it is giving me between 50-54% of my processor in reality. Should this be? It's a 2.8Ghz HT P4.

citrixmeta
12 Mar 2004, 4:48am
100% on a single session is 50% cpu usage on HTed P4's.

the way u set it up on HTed p4's is, 2 diff f@h directories, just answer the last question of the setting as MACHINE ID 1 and MACHINE ID 2.

2 f@h sessions, this will give u 100% cpu usage on ur cpu.

Ok then, thanks. :)

I may be taking a good 6 hour nap so I may not get this tonight :o , but how bad is it or how much stress is it when 100% is put on a cpu for a long period of time? All I have is air cooling, the heatsink is a zalman 7000a all cu --- so the heatsink is huge and all copper, and the fan is 92 mm, but its slow, so...
What is your thought on this increased stress? I set my duron processor for 90% and am only still running 1 on my HT system (50%). What would you go up to?

I can 90% guarantee that this is the last question. ;)

Ok, so i did the console setup, and its like a DOS window open. Do I have to leave it open? Can I hide it? :(

citrixmeta

there are utils to hide them.
lemme find them for ya!

keep folding!

Cool, cuz i can't stand windows open like that, not to mention, I will probably forget and in a clicking frenzy acidentaly close the thing.

Ok, so when it says completed 1 frame I shouldn't get that excited, since there are 399 more?

citrixmeta
12 Mar 2004, 1:53pm
hang in there, some frames are 200, some are 400, some are 100
fold on!

It's not bad at all. Check out this article for more info: http://www.tech-report.com/etc/2002q4/foldingimpact/index.x?pg=1

Ok, so when it says completed 1 frame I shouldn't get that excited, since there are 399 more? Well you should if it's your first frame! :D But yes, you still have all those other frames to finish.

A note about flags:

-forceasm on AMD processors will engage 3dnow!
-forceSSE will engage sse instruction sets, and it's case sensitive
-verbosity 9 will print more in your logs so you can troubleshoot problems easier
-advmethods asks for beta work units which are likely to be worth the most points.

A graphic explanation of how to set flags (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6347)

Hope that was helpful :)

maybe you didn't understand me, but that site tells about how little impact it has on system resouces, not on if the excess stress for long periods can harm the processor itself. I mean, if you were doing say... pullups and could not stop, you had to keep trying even without getting anywhere that would put a lot of stress on you.

Ive never burnt a processor by folding or harmed anything. That only happens when i am stupid!

killed a cpu because of folding? iv never seen/heard of anything like that.

Well maybe not "kill" Just shorten its life, yes yes I know that anytime the computer is being turned on and used it is shortening its life somewhat.

dont worry about it, just fold

:D :D :D
