I was looking at purchasing a copy of the Windows XP Professional Academic Upgrade. Currently I have Windows 98. When you use the upgrade Windows XP, do you have to install Windows 98 first or can you do a clean install using the upgrade Windows XP by just having the Windows 98 CD? Also, if you have to install Windows XP over Windows 98, does that negatively affect the performance? Finally, does the academic version have any drawbacks or limits to its performance. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

you should be able to do a clean install. i havent used the academic version but if its similar to other academic versions you will be able to.

Academic versions usualy sold by colleges for students to use and learn. purchasing at a discount. there should be no limitations to it.

dont install xp over 98, my experiance has shown me that xp dont like this.

During a clean install, what do you have to do, just insert the Windows 98 CD so the computer can verify it or something like that?

I was just kinda worried because on the Newegg site they say "Upgrade eligibility: (must have one of the following pre-installed, before installing Windows XP Pro upgrade)..."
