Hard Drive loading decreasing PC performance

I have a 120GB WD IDE 8mb Hard drive and I can't figure out why it takes so long to load software. Say for instance I run a virus scan check using Norton, after it's done, it takes longer than usual to load programs. What is going on?

sounds like an issue with norton. But to make sure do a defrag and scan on your harddrive to make sure it's not something physical.
