This movie never made it into the theatres around here (or if it did I missed the day they showed it).
Anyway it's on dvd now it's great.
There are two versions on the DVD the american and the original chinese release. This should go without saying but watch the chinese release. The american one is still subtitled but it's been re-edited so stupid american audiences don't have to pay attention, complete waste of time.
The movie starts out with an ex-soccer player who screwed up and that resulted in a broken leg. He gets fed up with being his brothers lacky and sets out to start up a team of his own.
He eventually rounds up a group of brothers who all practice shaolin kung-fu and he trains them to use their skills in soccer. So they enter the Supercup hall ass and eventually the Shaolin Soccer team meets up with Team Evil who is owned by the crippled's brother. Of course it's the final game tensions are high Team Evil is up to it's evil tricks etc...etc...
That's the story in a nutshell there is love interest as well but really the progress of the movie is fairly standard and predictable.
However it's a great ride. Sure it's completely ridiculous and over the top but I loved every minute of it. This movie makes the high flighing antics in CTHD and hero look like blind white belts going at it. The stunts they pull off here are more like something out of Fist of the North Star or Dragon Ball Z. Kicks that cause shock waves and people having their clothes burnt off of them from a fire infused soccer ball. Oh yeah it's crazy and you'll love it.
There is also a decent bit of comedy in it of the slap stick variety and it all works well together. This is probably a bit of a niche movie as those who don't like this sort of craziness aren't going to be one over. But if you want some crazy high flying action get this movie. It's a great sports comedy and just gets better as the movie progresses.
Incidentally I now have two all time favorite soccer movies this and Mean Machines.
