Ok, Someone handed me a AMD XP 2200+ TB, and I gather it was overheated once, because I can't run it at factory default 13.5x/133fsb without it distorting crap. (Text is doubleprinted on itself) and well, I want to know how, if there's a way I can crank this bastard up any further than 13x/133@1725mhz. Cooling isn't a problem since I've used *Ahem* some african injinuity to rig up a sweet cooling system. (Two 60mm fans blowing down through the fins, one 80 blowing across, Idle@38C.)

Distorting crap? Er? Why would you want to run a processor that distorts crap anyway. Whatever that means ;)

Please give more info, like why it doesn't want to go any higher. The rig freezes, restarts? What kind of thermal paste are ya using? Maybe get an even better one, for an even lower temp?
Crank up the voltage of course? Crank up the voltage of the ram?

It won't go higher, because windows 2000 gives me KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, but the board handles it just fine, it's even asking for faster. The one time I booted into linux with it at 14x, it ran fine, but I can't run linux on this box, because I'm not the only one that uses it. I'm using artic silver 2(?) I'm not too sure. The distortion problem got worked out, user error. (USWC mode is not compatable with 9500Pro, and I enabled Delayed transaction.) Heat isn't an issue, I've got the most effective, but very cumbersome cooling system. A 42 inch garage fan with a funnel attached. Loud, sure, but heat's never really a problem.

I guess I'd try reformatting and reinstalling windows 2000. I have no idea what "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" means. You might want to research about it on the internet.
Other than that, maybe try Windows XP?

Just googled "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED", there is a lot of info about it. Please be more specific about the error message. When does it show up? Does it show up only when you overclock? Are there any additional infos about it, maybe supply a screenie.

Yeah, lemme take a screenshot of a bluescreen. The exception happens at boot, just as 2000 starts to load, or it says NTFSKRN Or simular name has corrupted, reinstall yadda yadda yadda, but when I take it back down, it boots fine.

I know what KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED means.

The kernel has performed an error, and it was not handled in any form. Every time I format, and try it, it still does it. It did it with a 2100 palamino, or whatever. I buy OEM, because I was told the retails are locked.

I don't quite get it :>
Did you had a chance to try it with a different processor?
Try Windows XP :p

That's why I dumped the pal on a friend for this TB. I've tried XP, Updated my bios, I've tried 98. But it boots into 14x in linux. Also, I got a quick question. Are the retail processors(Ones that come in the AMD packaging) locked?

Retail/OEM makes no difference lock/unlock. If model X of a CPU is locked, both the OEM and Retail package processor are going to be locked, because they are the same thing.

Differences usually show up in the models of CPUs, like for example, the AMD Mobile Athlon XP CPUs are usually unlocked, whereas the non-mobile versions are locked. Engineering samples are usually (99% of the time) also unlocked.

i don't think there is a 220s tbred, only 2200s i've ever heard of was a pali. now, if you ask me, your gfx card is responsible for corrupted text.

It's a tbred. And I have not another video card to test it with, but the guy I got the card from overclocked, that's why he sent it to me, aside that he got an x800 for his birthday.

EDIT:// Ok, I got angry when it crashed rune, so I decided to do a little..*Ahem* sniffing about. Booted into safe mode with 13.5x and 14. Sadly, the problem is my video card. Both times it was an error in vga.sys. So, either the guy who gave me the card fucked it up, or the 9500 pro is a non-overclock card.

Do you know if your 2200+ is a thouroughbred a or b? I had a 2200+ when they first replaced the pali's, and it could only squeek out a 100Mhz- oc. Not too good at all. The B cores apparently did much better. Also, weren't 9500 pro's unable to be overclocked without a mod? I remember reading something about that quite a while back. http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDA5

The videocard runs stock speed, because it does just fine without it. It's a TB-A, because it says so in the image I attached(Points to extended family - revision entry, just incase no one uses CPUZ)...But the processor is definatly damaged, because the stock speed is 13.5x133. It doesnt' stay stable at 13x133, but stable at 12.5x133.(I could be playing any game that uses glide, and randomly, the bus would close(?) and the pc would blackscreen and shut down.) But the micron count tradeoff I got from getting this, was from 18, to 13, and this does better with my memory, which is Micron Technology.(Eerie..)

I've never heard of a 2200+ palamino....

In what way does this proc do better with your memory? You went from a 2000+ to this chip, right, so your actual clock speed is the same, or am I mistaken?

Well, originally, I was suppost to go from 1.78 to 1.80 and a chip I could overclock. Now, I went from 1.78 to 1.620, and I'm doing my damndest to keep it there. This chip is dead, and I can't wait untill I get the 300 from the other box I sold to replace this crap.

And the memory thing, I heard the lower processor micron count, the lower the cas# could be. I don't mess with my memory, because I don't know what I can do to it.

I dabble in overclocking a little bit and I had a 2200+, t-bred A also. Horrible overclocker! Got 1.9 and not a bit further, didn't matter how much cooling you had. I think that was pretty much the story on all the t-bred A chips. Anyways it's a shame that you can't even get stock speeds out of it. Here's to better times and higher oc's.

New Info.

Ok, I called up a buddy, and I literally took my pc appart, to find out the problem. I've thinned it down to two posibilities.

1: The processor is fucked. Very likely, since I got it from someone who built it themselves, and knew nothing about cooling.

2: My gart is fucked. I got a bad card before I got this 9500P. (Fuckin' sapphire...)

Also, I've noticed that the problem is no longer the original. The only game that fucks up now, is Painkiller. I've tried lowering AGP memory to 64mb (The ammount of memory that is actually used on the video card.) And disabled fast write, and Sideband addressing. Tried a medly of the three on, in diffrent instances. But I get the classic "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". I'm getting rather frustrated with this. Doom 3 never crashes, Neither does Farcry. Milkshape 3d, nor 3dsmax. Even XSI stays stable (And that's a miracle.)

if you mean AGP Aperture, that's the amount of memory the BIOS reserves in system RAM for the video card to use as temp storage. It only applies if the memory on the video card gets full.

So, I don't need to map any extra memory? Well hell, Thanks.

lordbean

it's good to keep a little mapped (possibly a lot if you know the game is a texture hog, e.g. Doom 3 takes up 512MB of texture mem at ultra quality, so a 256MB aperture is needed with a 256MB card). If you don't play games that have huge textures, a 128MB card can usually get by with no or very little aperture.

I've got 128+128, since I play D3 at med with bump.
