I have an 80gig SATA drive that is spare from my computer. Is there anyway that I would somehow attach the 80gig to my Laptop? Please direct me to a device I can buy for such a job. Thanks.

How is the SATA harddrive unit powered. From the pictures on the web I see only data connectors. Is it powered through these data connectors?

i bet you have to get some kind of external power source for it. maybe try to find a firewire enclosure(since it has better bandwidth) or use a usb one if all else fails.

You plug it into a cardbus slot and use SATA cables to the SATA drives.

As far as firewire being faster-- I'm not sure of that- here's an example- SATA Hard Drive with a Kick (http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20030501/wd360-06.html)

I still don't get it. In the picture of SATA adapter cardbus I see two SATA data connectors. Ok? I connect to one of these connectors (through the red cable) the harddisk data connector. Though, how is the unit powered. Who's providing power to the drive unit?

I believe there's no point in comparing USB and Firewire with SATA. SATA is better. Maybe future versions of firewire IEE1394b (800Mbps now to a possible 3200Mbps in the future) are going to beat SATA. So, I don't consider about an enclosure with USB and Firewire.

ok, oviously you thought i was compareing firewire to sata, witch i wasn't. i was saying that firewire was better than USB.

Oh, I get what your saying--- duhhh, This might be your answer for a spare internal SATA HD to be changed to an external SATA HD.
Serial ATA 2.5” External Portable Enclosure for IDE HDD (http://www.bixnet.com/seatasa2hadr.html)
Or an enclosure of this type to put the drive in and get power to it.
Am I on the right track?
SSR, Sorry, I see you were talking about getting a firewire enclosure, or USB if all else fails. I stand corrected friend.

Hawk,

Thanks for the link. I didn't know really that this is what I asked for so I think it was my fault.

So, for my spare SATA HDD (to get it mobile) I need a SATA Cardbus Adapter and the enclosure you mentioned. The enclosure will power the harddisk and the enclosure has a SATA data connector that connects to the one on the cardbus?

SSR, sorry!
