System restore won't bring back data files it'll only bring back programs. You can probably recover it with a undelete program but I don't know of any good free ones for NTFS partitioned drives.
However do a google for windows xp undelete and you should be able to find demos that will at least show you files that can be recovered. Just tell it to search in your recycle bin.
i googled and found this file recovery freeware, though i've never used it.
Restoration v2.5 (http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#restore).
Restore deleted files that are no longer in the Recycle Bin! When a file is deleted from your computer, its contents aren’t immediately destroyed. Its hard drive space is made available for use, but until that space is overwritten, your old data is usually intact. Restoration by Brian Kato recovers such files on either FAT or NTFS partitions. Only 406 KB (or 200 KB for XP or 2K), it fits easily on a floppy, or runs from your hard drive. Generally, the sooner you try to restore a file, the more successful you’ll be.
download onto a floppy if you can and run it from there.
good luck.

Greetings,
I suppose Active@ Undelete tool can help you to restore erased data. IT worked really great for me, it's restore methods are really powerful. You should definately give it a try.

You can also take into consideration Uneraser(for DOS).
