View Full Version : Google's very own Operating System?!
just read this off of slashdot
'Plan 9' from Google
Commentary: A browser may be just their first step (http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid=%7BCB1AB36C-D097-4451-93C4-A19141400FB5%7D&siteid=google&dist=google)
anyway, thinking that google might be making their own operating system gets me all excited. i just think that if anyone in the world could stand up to microsoft, and do it well, its google. i think they have the ability to successfully give them some competition.
so what do you guys think? is google just going to make a google branded linux distro or make their own OS from the ground up?

os from the ground up would be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
omg what if they teamed up with MAC to bring a distro of OSX to pc!
well, technically that would be a distro of BSD, but i see what you are saying. i just think that if anyone could make a kick ass OS, its google. i would love them forever :D

i love the simple yet useful style they used with the search engine and email. the same style in an operating system...wow the possibilities!

That's interesting but umm HELLO another opperating system seems like a waste of market share. You have linux/BSD, M$ and OSX. If the Google OS would just be another flavor of linux that's fine no biggy and I'd look forward to it. However if it's using it's own code then it'll be doomed to failure beyond anything accept a dumb box. Right now developers are stretched far too thin in porting software to various platforms as it is.
If they want to take on M$ as an actual replacement OS they'd have to have more then just a browser, business apps, games, utils etc.... Plus either they'd have to liscence M$'s activeX and .dll libraries to make it M$ compatible which means you are just running windows anyway.
Now OSX for PC would be sweet, the problem being PC's can't run OSX they aren't powerful enough to port the OS over directly it would have to be entirely redone because PC's don't run as many threads as MAC's they may have faster processers but they aren't as powerfull.

man, this is like a post from maybe 1997/1998. have you not been paying attention to everything that has been going on? first of all, people (mac AND pc users alike) LOVE apple. they have gained so much popularity with the enthusiast crowd in the last several years. second, did you hear what google did this year (along with being a huge company already and having boatloads of projects)? they went public, and while that is not the end-all-be-all, their stock went like crazy. yet another company that has out-the-wazoo support from investors as well as the public in general. were you there when the whole gmail thing was goin down? the internet was in mass hysteria just trying to get one. now, i realize these things are not something that can be assumed straight away that "omg google is going to pwn ms" or "zomgwtfbbq apple doesnt blow goats!!1", however, i highly suggest that you pay a little bit more attention to the world around you if you want to make posts here that dont "blow goats" . . .
