Ok upgraded to a DFI Lanparty NF3 and tried to install my m-audio revo 5.1 cant get it to work right. IT comes up with an ! on it in the device manager saying it cannot start. So i try diff pci slot same issue. Do another fresh install of Xp, Same problem, Install a Phillips acoustic edge, Same issue. WTF is going on? BOTH of these cards worked on my last mobo ( Abit KV8- max3 )
Ive tried New sound drivers adn even new chipset drivers and i am lost still
Oh and if i install onboard sound it only gives me REAR speakers not the front or center

Is this a home or office system ? Never heard of either of these.
What is a DFI ? Is it a PCI sound card ? m-audio,whats that ?
Speakers are 5.1 not sound cards.I think.

DFI is a mobo manufacturer like Asus, MSI etc.... NF3 is NForce 3 chipset on the mobo it's nvidia's mobo chipset as opposed to VIA for example. M-audio is the sound card.

But i was sorta expecting to hear from that other guy.
A sound problem should not result in the drastic steps he outlines.
reinstalling Windows. :horn:
Is this a plug and play quality sound card ?
M-audio usually refers to onboard sound.
Is onboard disabled ?
Where did you get the drivers ?
==============
But i must add kryyst,
Via is a motherboard chipset not a video card chipset.right or wrong ?

Sometimes it IS necessary to reinstall windows.
M-Audio is a brand.
He HAS disabled on-board. (I've spoken to him about this issue)
He got the drivers from the manufacturer's website, and he's tried pretty much any driver he can get his hands on.
VIA makes motherboard chipsets. :)

Of couse sometimes IS.
But that usually is when i have to upgrade Windows not troubleshoot plug and play hardware.

I've had corrupt installs of Windows many times. Only a complete reinstall was able to get me going again. Also, there are a lot of times when a problem is just so bad, that the time and energy to fix it just isn't worth it, and a reinstall is in order.

I'd love for someone to put a stop to it. No offense meant in any way, but it's not going to be you I trust, as you had to ask what VIA does. Which is fine, and we're here to help people learn. I have no problem explaining that info. It's just, you don't sound like you have the experience you make yourself out to have with today's computers. :)
Also, I've been messing with computer since I was 6, and that was in 1990, so I'm not too far behind you. ;) Most of the time I have minor issues, but when I begin to deal with new hardware, beta or alpha drivers, apply new service packs or directx updates, start to OC, etc., that can cause big problems with the OS that only a reinstall can fully repair.

After you did a fresh install of XP did you download any updates? I recently did a reinstall of XP SP1 and decided to download a bunch of "critical updates" and the first round went fine, but after rebooting the second round of updates it said my computer needed screwed things up so bad I had to go back to and earlier restore point. And I avoided SP2 completely *which may be where my problem lied, but I hear SP2 is crap.*
I'm assuming you're running DX9c as well?

Have 2 comps on SP2, not 1 issue. There will always be some people who will have probs with any given update/software.
kryyst
24 Feb 2005, 6:59pm
SP2 won't be the issue. Given that he's tried 2 different sound cards and different pci slots there is either a key driver issue which can only be directx 9 or a hardware issue either something wrong with the mobo or the bios.
I'm tending to think it's something with the mobo since NF3's have full surround support and he's only getting rear sound off the onboard.
However to completely eliminate windows as the problem take it out of the loop. Boot up using knoppix or mephis and see what kind of sound you are getting out of it. Sadly that may not be a guaranteed test since there is some chance it may not recognize your sound hardware given it's farily new and the linux kernels may not be up to date but it's definitely worth trying out since every good computer persoon should have a copy of either :)

You might be causing these problems i don't let happen.
And i didn't ask about Via,I had it with my last pc.

This is asking YOU what i already knew. lol

PC.You need the update via sometimes to fix things.
So lets get back to sound,DXdiag is a test.
My old mx300 works fine still.
Do you want the upgrade patch ? I might still have it.

I spoke with him last night. He was praising me, as I had helped someone else out on the DFI forums. It was with jumper settings on the onboard sound. Gnome messed with his, and he now has full 5.1 with his onboard. Unfortunately, his cards still don't work.
Zuntar
25 Feb 2005, 5:04pm
I should have thought of that cuz my mobo is the same way. There are two jumper on the board L & R, you either have sound out the back or sound out the front, not both.
Me feels stupid now.
Cyclonite
25 Feb 2005, 5:19pm
Yeah. DFI has pretty much the same thing going on. When i got mine, one of the jumpers was in the wrong spot, so I got no sound form my left speaker.

yea the onboard 5.1 is working now which makes me happy but still no luck with pci sound cards

is there a jumper that needs to be set to dissable the onboard? Actually why bother I thought the onboard audio on the NF3 boards was full 5.1 and supposed to be very good.

How do you control 2 different sound drivers ? Internal or PCI ?
How can you decide wich one is active ?
Isn't that causing a conflict ?
Isn't one good enough ?
Too hot for me.

Huh? He's got the on-board sound working. As he stated previously, he's been unable to get a PCI sound card to install and work correctly on the machine. He HAS disabled the on-board sound when he tries, as stated previously. That would remove the conflict. And, yes, one is good enough. But there are different quality sound cards, and he happens to have one that is of higher quality than the on-board sound. He had preferred to use that, but since he couldn't get it working, he's happy with the on-board.

Well i have onboard and my PCI Audigy 2 works fine, this is just a matter of disableing onboard and not trying PCI till device manager is blank.
Not trying to override the internal.Video "maybe" Audio "NO"
But of course you need a Motherboard manual .
That would

Gnome: just use the onboard sound. I've got the same board, and it's as good as if not better than any consumer level PCI card you can stick in it.

Oldtimer just get off this forum. You think that standard is good enough but some people just want the best. Seriously don't criticize people just cuz they have a problem. Try and help them (though i doubt you can). And by the way pretty much everyone on this forum has been using computers for a long time. My first was a Macintosh LC II 55mhz biotch.
