Installing XP on previously 98 machine

Greetings,
I was given a 2.2 Celeron machine with 512ram which previously had windows 98 on it. The harddrive was reformatted before I got it. I reformatted the harddrive with a 98 bootable floppy again. I tried to install windows xp on it and it says install the correct disk when I try. I made a floppy from my xp disk and same problem. What am I doing wrong?

When does it say install the correct disk.
Why did you reformatted the hard drive with a 98 floppy. The XP installation has a format.

I didn't know I could reformat the 98 machine with a windows xp startup floppy disk. It says use the correct disk in dos when I tray and load xp. I guess I should try and reformat with windows xp startup floppy??

You shouldnt need a boot disk for an XP install, change your boot order and as long as your BIOS supports it you can boot from the CD.

when formating and installing windows Xp you don`t go into dos and try to boot from the setup from the cd. Just start hitting F8 after the bios screen and you should get a screen showing you on wich boot device you want to start. Select the cd-rom drive that you have the xp cd inside and when asked press any key to boot from cd-rom ......... do it.
If F8 does not work then you have to go into bios setup and change the boot sequence

On some systems the "boot order" key is F11. Look at the top or bottom of the screen when the BIOS is at the first part of bootup, it might tell you which key is right for you. Let us know what happens!:cool:
