New WRT Firmware

I've been using DD-WRT for a good while now on my Linksys router and while it works pretty good it's never really worked quite right overall. The QoS is kinda half assed the UPnP has some issues and it's kinda slow and bloated to work with. I mean it's still a hell of a lot better then the default Linksys firmware but it's not perfect. I've tried with OpenWRT but again it's got problems and I've almost bricked my router a few times. So the ever going quest for Linksys firmware continues. Not to mention that DD-WRT has started going the commercial route and to get certain features you need to subscribe - so screw them.

I've now started using Tomato Firmware (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) So far it's much faster then DD-WRT and seems a lot more stable. The QoS is so much better and UPnP works the way it should be so no more need to add port forwarding for torrents ichat etc... The interface is a lot faster and it has some other cool features like wifi sniffing. The downside is it doesn't currently support KAI or VPN natively (you can still use the software options of either though). But it's pretty new and getting better.

I've never messed with the firmware on my router before; worth it?

For me it was but that's because I have a WDS setup and I also wanted QoS so my torrents didn't interrupt browsing or voice chat etc.... Also there was some speed gain in just switching to other firmwares because they allowed to open up the bandwidth of the router beyond normal parameters.

Yea, I have been playing with the DD-WRT frimware, and it is a nice upgrade. QoS is especially nice, plus you have more options with wireless (including boosting the radio single power) and access control. I agree with you kryyst on the DD-WRT frimware, it is nice, but it is kind of slow and buggy.
