Irrelevant statement. He was checking the members list for post counts long before you ever instituted them in the postbit.

Makes me wonder who would have top post counts if the Pub wasn't counted in total number posts...

The spyware assistance crew, probably.

They count in the pub now, unless the server is exteremly slow at updating the post count.

FYI, Notable Milestones is the only forum that doesn't count, presently.

QCH2002
4 Jun 2007, 07:54pm
Gosh... we'd have some serious post count movement if the milestones DID count. Why aren't they counted? Curious.

I dont nessicarily think post counts are good but they do have a way of distinguishing who has been here the longest, maybe a Diff rating?

I had always had the impression that the join date was the way of distinguishing who has been here the longest.

Look at the top poster list. Tell me those people aren't helpful.

That alone should explain the decision.

Post count and join date together give a good indication of the dedication to the site and, maybe, the type of person they are.

A recent member with high post counts... talks a lot and probably a drifter.

Ancient join date with 100 posts... a lurker and may not feel comfortable giving advice.

Big give away... the Admin, Adjudicator, Guru, Spyware Expert... they give a nice indication they know something, have blackmail material on the owners, slept around, or killed everyone else in front of them. :D

Seconded.

Post count and join date together give a good indication of the dedication to the site and, maybe, the type of person they are.

Sure, but that's only relevant to newbies wondering whether or not to take advice seriously. Plus, they don't know what kind of person someone is, anyway. Established forum members don't have a need for dedication approximations. I say we give Nomad a gold star if he wants to feel special.

In other news: ZOMG 3,479 + 1 = 3,480!1!1!!!

Well unless someone wants to push Keebs to turn on the Rep system (trust me I've tried) post counts will have to work :)

just a number that is a fairly accurate indicator of penis size. several research studies have shown this.

Gee, I wouldn't want to spoil everyone's jovial mood with my seriousness, but one reason I don't like post counts is that people start to think that trolling is more acceptable from people with 13,000 posts than it is for someone with one post.

Post counts just aren't useful, and I thought it made Short-Media feel a little different from other forums by their absence. The old layout where they could only be seen in profiles was a nice compromise. Sorry if you don't think it warrants discussion.

Thrax

Relax, sir. :O

I ask you this: Look at the members list and sort it by post. Of the people on that list who are still posting, are any of them not helpful? I'd think you'd agree that they're all very competent and very smart people. Similarly, even people who are not Gurus or Adjudicators can be recognized by their post count as being helpful.

We don't have anyone who earnestly trolls just to get a higher post count. If you think Nomad was serious with this thread, instead of trying to make people smile, I ask you to reconsider your position.

The point is: While there's not much of a correlation elsewhere, high posts = helpful people on SM, and it lets new members lock into those people quickly, for faster help. A lot of people come here just looking for a quick fix, and will never take the time to learn who knows what.

That's the motive behind the change, I think.

But oh my god, people need to relax. It really is just a number. :) It's not worth the fuss.

Gargoyle

It's not that I took Nomad seriously (have I ever? ;)), but this thread seemed the most relevant to the post count topic. It was a reference to my pink panties that attempted to belittle my position that got me upset.

I totally agree that post counts can be helpful to new members (acknowledged that earlier), but I also haven't seen a whole lot of bad advice being given here at all that would necessitate a glance at post counts.

You're right, it's not that big of deal. If they stay, life will go on :). I just wanted my chance to say why I'd rather see them go.

(Internetspeak doesn't translate well. I use "Wadded panties" all the time IRL when someone is unhappy; I don't mean anything pejorative by it)

I think the post counts are quite cool. We the same people today that we were yesterday. Let's hope we all mature enough not to let a silly number change that. I suppose time will tell if they make any difference to the way members behave in here.

Now..... whats going to be the quickest way to 1000 posts??:p

Its so small anyway you can hardly see it.. Is there any chance of adding a couple of thousand to mine? 400 posts doesn't fit with being the 20th person to joing the site..
