View Full Version : I'm all enrolled at OSU

I went through orientation yesterday and today and got enrolled. I don't think my schedule is as hard as it should be, but whatever. I'm only taking 13 hours. Which means I'm going to have to take 15 next semester.

Here is my schedule:

UNIX Programming 2351; M; 11:30 - 12:20
Intro To Engineering 1111; T; 4:30 - 5:20
Calculus I 2144; MWRF; 1:30 - 2:20
General Physics 2014; TR 9:00 - 9:50(Lecture); F 2:30 - 3:20(Discussion); T 2:30 - 4:20(Lab)
American Government 1113; MWF; 9:30-10:20

I think that I should have taken chemistry or my Computer Science II class since I AP'd out of Comp Sci I, but she insisted that load was probably already too heavy. She didn't even want me doing physics and calculus in the same semster when I told her I would be pledging. I think I should have at least added Comp Sci II. It is Java and I did really well in AP Comp Sci last year. I love programming. I think that I could have handled it easily, but whatever. If I get 2 semesters behind I'm gonna be pissed.

Yeh, she was gonna let me take Comp Sci II, but when I told her I would be most likely pledging she said hell no because of all the social obligations the first semester. She said I could take 15 hours in the spring, granted I have to take that to get my scholarship. Physics is looking to be my hardest class.

When I started in college at the University of Cincinnati in Engineering it was expected that you take Calculus, Physics and Chemistry at the same time, it was a weedout program basically... My first three quarters looked like this...

Fall
Freshman English I
Chemistry I
Intro to Logic
Latin American History
Computer Engineering I

Winter
Freshman English II
Engineering Calculus & Analytical Geometry II
General Physics I
General Physics I Lab
Chemistry II

Spring
Engineering Calculus & Analytical Geometry III
General Physics II
General Physics II Lab
Computer Science II
Professional Development I
Network Analysis I

My freshman year was just like crazy joe's. They try to weed out the weak ones first. Its pretty interesting to see how many of your friends are still in your classes at the end of the year.

Wow, my freshman year was nothing like that, then again, I attended the local community college here in Tallahassee because each semester only cost about $1200 including books and supplies. Just started back there following a rough time after Mortin's death, so I will be at FSU next spring.

Then again, I'm also a liberal arts major (english lit and creative writing / journalism) so my schedules have almost always been different than most of my friends / forum mates.

Yep, when they were taking the class picture on our first day they told us, "Look to your left and look to your right. When you graduate the two people standing next to you won't be there." That was very true... Engineering at UC was tough...

That's the kind of narrow-minded thinking usually spouted by people who couldn't get into a fraternity.

Yeh. I agree with kwitko

I have several cousins that have been to OSU and they have all been in fraternities. I've talked to them about a lot of stuff so I know what I'm getting into. And they said that there really weren't any hidden costs as far as the house or anything goes. And they said there is a little bit of hazing but it wasn't bad. And of course there is going to be drinking and partying. That happens regardless of the fraternity or not. That's just part of being young and a lil' bit stupid.

tmh88
25 Jun 2007, 04:18am
Fraternities are different everywhere you go. Its pretty much if you don't know the guys, your not getting into their house, so i guess thats where the idea of them being *******s comes from. When random people show up to our parties its kinda weird. I mean would you invite a whole bunch of people you don't know into your own house? And as for the not helping the community party, it all depends on the fraternity. Some are complete douches which I will agree on, and others are actually involved in the community. I'm the philanthropy chair of mine and we actually set up a bunch of programs. One that was really cool was a tutoring program for a local middle school.

BTW generally living in a fraternity/off campus housing is a lot cheaper than staying in the dorms. Pretty much dorms are the most expensive yet ****tiest apartments you will ever live in.

pigflipper
25 Jun 2007, 04:58am
No, I have my reasons for disliking them and their practices. I might be biased by where I live, but I know of some stories from other places. Pledging a frat is what sent Keith on that long slow slide. It was torture on him. I won't go into detail in public, but it was bad.

Zing!

They may cost $400 more per year than the dorms do, but that's assuming you're living in-house. Freshmen don't live in the house, right? And freshmen have to pay all the initiation fees to boot. So next year, what's rush gonna cost you, besides your grades?

Interesting. At OU, you can't live in house until you are a Sophomore.

I know that I'd rather spend the extra $400 on something like booze, computers, or car parts. That's just me.

I believe Sledge was in a fraternity and graduated in 3 years with a degree in architecture. I too was in a fraternity. We partied, sure, but we also spent once a week with special-ed students from the local high school. At the national level, my fraternity sponsors a cross-country bike ride to raise money to support services and programs for people with disabilities. Most all fraternities raise money for charitable organizations. It's entirely possible to be in a fraternity and do well in school. It's also possible to not be a fraternity and fail miserably.

Zanthian Joined a service fraternity instead of a social fraternity. They usually don't have their own house, but they are much more rewarding, it looks much better on a resume, and they usually let girls join.

Look into your campus's service fraternities before you decide.

Well. Here we are. 6 months later.

My second semester just started, and pledge ship is over. I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions of my life. To kwitko's dissapointment I didn't have to wear a wiener suit or do anything else publicly humiliating. :D

It was tough though and a lot of fun at the same time. Between required homecoming hours, coke dates, and pledge functions I'll admit that it was a lot of work. It seems that I was either studying or doing pledge activities most of the time. Which is probably a good thing because we had required study hours. I can honestly say without them I don't know if I would have made it through the first semester as I used to be quite the procrastinator. And with all the activities they threw at us the first semester we had to figure out time management very quickly and either sink or swim. Some of my pledge brothers didn't make grades :( but they have one semester to bring them up.

I got a 3.0 and have transfered from engineering to business. I realized that maybe engineering wasn't my cuppa tea the more I started getting into the classes and talking to alumni that are engineers. I was pretty proud of myself for getting a 'c' in physics because the professor was very blunt that 70% of people will get a D, F, or W in the class. His final was torture. 6 questions, two and a half hours.

Anyways. I'm taking 18 hours this semester and so far I'm really like my classes. My philosophy teacher is a spitfire and seems to question a lot of things like me. My econ teacher is old and boring, but I think I'll live:D. MSIS is right up my alley, but I'm gonna be a little board in it because it is going to teach me office 2003 for the third time.

Glad things are going well. Too bad the economics professor is crusty. That can be a fascinating study with a dynamic instructor. Sorry about the physics struggle. What you've learned though, will enrich the rest of your life. Hang in there. It will all pay off one way or another in the future.

As we know them, fraternities are mostly an American phenomenon. They're in Canada and PR, too, but not quite as prevalent.

The "Greek System" is present almost exclusively in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) and Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada), with a minority of organizations having chapters elsewhere, such as the Caribbean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean), Africa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa), and Asia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia).
