OK a bud of mine started convincing me of how great Mac is... and when I tried to tell him off on several things I thought were fact he blew them away with proof I was a moron. Granted I never had much problems against Mac lately either but it just didn't feel right to me.

Now I am at work, bored, and watching WWDC keynote's and features for Leopard and it looks pretty damned good, plus I've always had something for the Mac Mini, I like my computers small

Ubuntu and Windows will stay on my laptop though, no need to get rid of it. hehe, let the flaming begin.

Meh, in my opinion there's nothing wrong with a Mac. In fact, I'm glad there are alternative operating systems, even though I may not use them.

RWB, consider writing an IC BLOG with your experiences. Start with day 1 when you first power up your Mac. That could be a very enjoyable thread and a learning experience for those of us who are Mac illiterate.

As someone who has used them since the age of two, I can say that you're making the right decision.

One thing that has stopped me in the past from buying a Mac are the stuck up Mac fan boys that make me wanna kick them in the groin, then rip their esophagus out slap it in their Macbook and shove it up their ass.

But things change, now I just wanna punch them and steal their Mac.

I'm gonna get a mac book pro for college.

Now the only decision I have to make is to get the 15 or 17 incher. The 17 inch one costs more but gives me more screen real estate. The 15 inch is smaller and more portable, but I give up some screen space which I don't like to do. I'm leaning towards the 15" and I guess if I need more space I can just hook up my 20" monitor.

I have a 17" notebook, battery life sucks and I now use an external monitor usually when I am at home becuase it is still small. a 15.4" display really isn't that much smaller though either.

I have nothing against OSX and even some of Apple's computer choices. But I don't like getting ripped off on pricing for on some of their choices at least, trailing edge hardware. And the Mac Mini is the worst offender in that regard, IMO. The only thing it has going for it is small size. But it uses last year's notebook cpu's, trailing edge integrated graphics, proprietary mobo layout, notebook hard drives which are much slower than a corresponding 3.5" desktop drive and pretty much nil upgrade path. For desktop Apple systems, the only one that is a good bargain is actually their high end offering, the Mac Pro. With it you get a hell of a lot of computer for your money and in it's class it is fully competitive with other offerings from major OEM's.

And airborn, I really wanted to buy a MBP 17" for my new laptop but Apple's pricing was over $800 more than my Dell E1705. I would have loved to go with the MBP, but it was just too much difference in price to justify.

I think I'm gonna get the 15" MBP, and I can get it ~$400 cheaper if I buy it through my university so thats what I may do.

You're going to look like a tool lugging around a laptop to class and trying to fit it on a desk that barely fits the 15.4''.

airbornflght
24 Jun 2007, 04:30am
Which is why I'm gonna get the 15 incher. What do you think, glossy or anti-glare screen. I heard the anti-glare has better color representation so that may be what i do.

And there is nothing wrong with being someones tool every once in a while, or wait, fool. not tool.

I just don't see what Mac's can do that PC's can't... I also don't see why I would spend more cash for less hardware...

Mac's are nice sure, but I just can't see switching to a system or OS that doesn't support 50% of my time I spend on PC's.

RWB what are you going to do on your MAC & or PC? like the entire list of programs?

If your doing video editing than Yes go Mac, but if you're not doing video I don't see why you would want to spend the extra cash.

OMG, you can play Breakout or....SUPER BREAKOUT!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, if you are gamer in any shape, don't consider a Mac. End of Story.

if u are a gamer, u can still game on mac, running bootcamp with xp.

but i'm glad after using my macbook for about a year now, since i just do not game anymore, and for what i use the laptop for, it's been very good to me.

I don't really game so its not a big deal to me. And now that OSx is running on x86 isn't it going to be easier to get the games over to mac?

EA is already working on bringing a few of their games out as well as future releases.

That's a good idea, but will have to wait till Leopard comes out which is when I plan on buying... something.

Yeah the Mac Mini was sort of on my mind as a possible buy, but while it is relatively cheap the hardware is subpar. The iMac looks OK, but my main concern is the X1600. While I don't game much, I don't think it's good enough for when I do game.

I just don't see what Mac's can do that PC's can't... I also don't see why I would spend more cash for less hardware...

Good points really... this is mostly me wanting to try something new. I don't think my 3Ds Max license works with a Mac and Softimage XSI 5 as well, and it's a credit card payment I'm gonna deal with for a while so I'll be dual booting Windows XP for the time being. But it seems to me the Mac comes with great video editing software without having to buy it, unless you need Final Cut or something more advanced which I don't. There's Windows Movie maker, but..... omg it sucks I am not even gonna go there.

So I don't see myself requiring a huge Mac Pro, or Mac Book Pro. Right now I think the iMac comes with what I need. I am not too excited about the X1600, but I won't be gaming on it much and it'd probably only be WoW which I usually play while working so I can take my break every 5 minutes or so. I don't see myself playing the latest incarnation of games much anymore, I am going more old school lately.

Anyways, going with the less than expensive approach should be useful for if I do actually regret it... I keep my mind open to that possibility. It would be nicer if Leopard came out for normal PC hardware though, but my Laptop is not 64bit.

It's now on my mind.... will my licences transfer from Windows to Mac? 3Ds Max 8, Photoshop CS2, Macromedia Studio 2004 Pro

I guess this is a very important aspect. Although my bet is that 3Ds Max 8 won't even run on a Mac, the other two are also expensive and would kind of defeat the purpose of moving to a Mac.

macdude425
24 Jun 2007, 05:56pm
Yeah, 3Ds Max 8 won't run on a Mac. You'll have to Boot Camp that one, or something.

Macromedia Studio 2004 Pro's license will transfer, so says the digital artist I just talked to. Be warned it'll run butt-slow because of Rosetta.

Very true, Max will not run on Mac's... atleast not yet. I haven't heard how it runs out of bootcamp... I am also not sure how a render farm setup willw ork if you use that option.

Due to speed reasons, I don't think I'd ever want to be rendering on a Mac. I don't doubt the programs ability to function capably during the creative process if it were to be ported, but your rendering speed is crippled compared to what a PC could offer for the same price.

X2

Completely agree..

Worked around both for 20 yrs...

Used a MAC at work, a PC at home for the 1st 4 yrs of working full time life.

My latest home PC (2 years old - self built) runs rings around my uncle's G5 in all CS2 apps.

Haven't had a Virus/Spyware/BlueScreen since I built it.

I got my fiance a screaing deal on a 14.1" widescreen Duo-Core HP laptop. It came with Vista HP, Office 07, Adobe PhotoShop CS3, AntiVirus, etc... AND a 3 yr accidental damage warranty. Even with all the extra software and the warranty this machine was still over $500 less than a MAC of similar stats. I have always preferred "quality" over "price", but cannot justify the price difference over a perceived "Better-ness". Nothing a MAC does is "better-enough" to warranty me buying one...

Never understood the Apple/Mac fanboi-ism.. Never will.
