Hi All,
I post this on behalf of my son who has a 3 month old laptop running Vista Home Premium. When shutting down all is well until it gets to the stage just before turn off it goes to a green screen with vertigal lines. This is not all the time but pretty regular. I have watched it for a while and I can't see thats its any particular programme he has been using just before shutdown. It seem to be operating ok apart from that.
If anybody has any ideas, it would be great.
Thanks in advance

Start with these guides:

http://icrontic.com/articles/hard_drive_diagnostics
We're going to rule out hardware problems, then start with software. :)

Hi Thrax,
Thanks for fast reply.
We have ran both programmes. The first was memtest86 with the following results:
Pass: 3
Errors: 0
Hard drive diagnostics results as follows: 0x00
Kind Regards
Stephen
:)
Awesome. So that pretty much rules out the hardware. :)
Now, do you have all the updates available to Windows? Including the newest drivers for your devices, especially video?

Hi Thrax,
Thanks again.
Windows updates is switched on, how do we check if we are up to date?
How do we check for updates for video etc?
You can check for updates at the windows update website, but if you have Automatic Updates turned on, then you should be okay.
You can check the drivers for each piece of hardware individually in your device manager.
Control Panel > System > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager
Your hardware will be listed out by type, and you can open a context menu on each device, go to 'properties', and check to see if the driver is up to date.

Thanks for the reply CB Droege.
Everything seems to be ok with drivers.
We have narrowed the problem down a little. When using the PC all is fine. If we go to hibernate and restart again, when we eventually go to shutdown it then freezes. Powering on and off normally without going to hibernate its fine. The problem seem to lie with hibernate. This is a strange one.
Any help would be great.
Stephen.

It's not all that strange, really. Hibernate is very buggy, on any version of Windows. Hibernation relies heavily on hardware support, and the support isn't that fantastic.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes that seems to be our problem alright. If anybody has any ideas to fix this bug it would be great, that's if it can be fixed.
Thanks again
Stephen
