I was never that impressed with beryl or any form of 3D interface, it just seems too..... gimmicky.

Ditto. I like a nicely-polished 2D interface. Some of the shells for XP over at deviantart are beautiful.

Can you use it in 3d: to do anything? Haven't bothered with Beryl yet - have installed on one machine though.-never used it

I find it useful in that it allows me to drag open windows to other desktops quickly and easily, though I'm sure you can probably do it with a few keystrokes in Ubuntu alone.
It has its useful features, IMO ...its not like I sit there for a good 5 minutes just spinning a cube.

Beryl lowers cpu load when used in conjunction with XGL.... thats the only REAL selling point it had to me. But it is pretty cool for a few hours.

Oh man if only i could get it to work on my computer, but there's always something that doesn't work. Or i get sent to the consol for messing with the x-conf. At least 3d graphics is working.

I run tenebrific (http://freshmeat.net/projects/tenebrific/) theme on metacity (the stock GNOME window manager). It's not 3D but it does use compositing. Very nice-looking imho, maybe screenshots to follow if I remember when I get my replacement machine.
