Slow Computer, norton settings?

Hello. My mother has a Dell Dimension 2400, at least 4-5 years old, maybe more. It is running windows XP Home and has Norton Antivirus. I formatted it 2 months ago or so, and reinstalled everything, including Norton Internet Security 2007. Immediately after install I noticed a severe slowdown, as if dropped into a barrel of 3-year old syrup. I takes 44 seconds to open my computer, with all the XP eyecandy disbled. That's how slow it is. I suspect Norton to be the criminal here, as I have scanned it with all sorts of programs and it comes out clean. I have also tried to defrag it, with no noticeable change. Are there any settings to make Norton run faster or something, or should I just scrap it altogheter? My mother is against any freeware antivirus, even if I assure her that it is perfectly Ok, and that they are just as good as Norton (in my experience).

You have to Install windows xp with the cd that comes with your pc. In the process don't try to reinstall it, just do a new fresh install. in there if your hard disk is in partition mode delete the partition(it will ask u about it)after installing windows xp the first thing you have to install is your Anti Virus then scan all the softwares(data that you saved in CD or DVD)don't do scans in Originals Softwares (CD's) for example microsoft office original etc..
Thats it then your PC will Run Like a 2500 Horse Power

well, I have done everything you mention, I did a complete format, reinstalled with my XP-cd, deleted all partitions, installed Norton, and then it got slow.

Norton itself is slow. If you want a fast computer, Norton can't be on the machine.

I've figured that much out. Is there no way to tweak it or something? She says that she could use Norman, I really have no experience with it,is it any good?

Norton can't be tweaked; it's simply a very bad program, I'm afraid.
