Trying to discourage piracy (and mayhaps encourage the adoption of skills that will follow students to their workplace after graduation), Microsoft has let it be known that the Ultimate edition of Microsoft Office 2007 will be available at a student price of $59.95 in what they are calling "The Ultimate Steal".

Alan Yates, general manager of Microsoft's World Wide Education division, comments on the timing of the news:

<blockquote>"In terms of the timing of The Ultimate Steal promotion, I think what really kicked it off was the proliferation of buying behavior on the Web of large file size assets such as movies, large music files, and other software tools that require a significant download. Generally speaking, good broadband coverage exists in the countries that we're launching the promotion in so we think it makes a huge amount of sense for us to offer Office via download as well for students."</blockquote>

And mayhaps the proliferation of downloading huge pirated rarballs of Office 2007, too.

Ah, I jest. At any rate, $60 is really not a bad price to buy an Ultimate version of Office 2007. See The Ultimate Steal Website (http://www.theultimatesteal.com/) for more info.

Or. I could download it all for free. Usually if you are a student then your university will have an educational agreement, no? I can get office, vista business, server 2003, and many others for free unless I want the disc.

Is the timer increasing? I looked earlier and it said about 1.5 hours. Now it says 2.5...

Does it say how many computers it can be installed on at once?

Definitely not bad. Need a new comp to run it though, nothing I've got can handle XP and 2003, much less XP and 2007.

Man, this is just perfect for the computer I'm building up for my niece right now. She is in college right now so this will fill the need for her to get the latest Office on this new computer at a cheap price, and legally too.

Not a bad deal at all. I wish I had a use for it. I've already got two copies given to me free from MS events. I'm not a student anymore, by my e-mail still works. :)
