vista/xp file sharing issue

i've got three computers networked...

comp1 - winxphome sp2
comp2 - winxphome sp2
comp3 - vistahome

now i am sharing files between them.. the problem is, vista gets full access with the shared folders on the two xp machines...

both the xp machines can see all the shared folders on vista, but can only access public folder (default shared by vista)...

the ones i enabled sharing manually (with full control access) i can't click into from the xp machines

has anyone come across this issue?

Probably...I say that because I networked my XP lappy with my Vista box about 7 months ago and don't remember. But if you can see the share but don't have access, that is usually about permissions. Look at my screen shot. This is a folder I share to my XP machine. I gave "everyone" full control of the folder for sharing.

I think you're problem lies there somewhere. Just right click on the shared folder, then click the "Share..." item and you'll get what you see in the attached.

yes i have set the folders to be shared with full control permission... it still wouldn't let me in... dumb @$$ vista lol

I have exactly the same problem as you have. All my permissions are checked for full access and control and still Vista tells me I don't have permission.
If anyone figures this one out I will also be very grateful.

Sorry guys but it's been a while since I set mine up. Since then I keep telling clients not to buy Vista.

Go to Control Panel> Network and Sharing Center. You'll see this attachment. Turn off Password Protected Sharing and see if that makes the XP machines happy.

Diayum manuleka. So it sounds like you can see the share, but get the "access denied"? If you can't see it, try to get there via the share path. In the case of my screen shot above it's \\tcserver\acronis. That will take me right to the share and I don't bother trying to browse there though Network Neighborhood.

But judging from your posts, I think you get there but don't have access. Is that right?

I will also tell you that the user name and password are exactly the same on both my XP lappy and my Vista pain-in-the-ass. Still, since you have unchecked password protection that should not be an issue. I've also networked a couple other Vista boxes on a peer to peer but have not had your problem. As I Google I find that others have.

thers a MS hotfix available that will allow XP and Vista machines to get along with each other. it's in windows update under the optional updates...don't know the exact hotfix number, but read the descriptions and you will find it...talks about networking XP and Vista together.

See and access files on either the Vista machine or XP machine from either machine across the network, not tried wireless access via laptop yet.

The good thing is that both the firewall's of the XP and Vista machine both remain on, so there is no need to turn them off, even if you have a hardware firewall in your router.

1. Check that both the Workgroup names (not the Network names) on both of the machines are the same.
The default in Vista is WORKGROUP

This can be changed by right clicking on 'Computer' or 'My Computer' on the desktop and then selecting Properties.

2. Make sure your Windows Vista network type is set to a Private Network.
You can modify this via the Network and Sharing Center option in the Control Panel, by clicking on Customize.

This means your computers will be discoverable on the network.

3. Make sure that the green led type lights in the Network and Sharing Center are on for File Sharing and Network Discovery.
Make sure that both computers are set up for file sharing.

4. If networking an XP machine to a Vista machine, you may need some extra Microsoft software.

This software will install the new Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) onto the Win XP machine. This enables the network map in Vista to show all machines on the network.
You will need to reboot your Windows XP machine, to see the changes of the software.

You do have to make sure the firewall sees it as a private network, not a public one

Summary
That's it you should now see your computers on your network. If not, try disabling the windows firewall's on both the computers to see if that is affecting anything

thanks guys... i have read through alot of stuff on the net while trying to solve this networking issue!

i have done all that you guys have suggested prior to making my post here....


the only thing that i haven't tried to creating the same usernames and passwords for the xp and vista... all computers have password disabled...

I wish I could remember. I do konw that I had some issue I had to work though. It was harder to network than XP. But I've also networked Vista and XP for a client and didn't have the issue that you and some others have had.

It is a quirky Op Sys, that's for sure. I've had some really strange things getting it to connect through remote desktop too.
