adsl modem installation

just trying to install an adsl modem on a family members computer! its an AMD athlon 64 that i built quite sometime ago with this mainboard

when installing the modem, it reports that there's no Ethernet Card Installed... now i realise that the Onboard networking is a 10/100M, Broadcom AC131 PHY...

this kinda confuses me... do i need to install some special driver or something to make this broadcom network be ethernet capable?

i'm quite confused now with what ethernet really is... is it some sort of protocol? is it a hardware dependent?

do i have a chance of getting ethernet run on this onboard Broadcom network on should i just get an Ethernet NIC Card?

ethernet mainly refers to the type of physical connection you are using the protocols are something seperate. So if it's a standard nic from the last 7 years and basically looks like a fat phone jack then it's ethernet especailly if it's listed as a 10/100 connection, which is referring to the speed.

If your modem software isn't detecting the network card then it's likely that you just don't have the correct drivers installed for it. Check in your device manager and see if you have any flagged items, odds are one of them is for your network card.

It is also possible that the onboard nic, which is what that broadcom ethernet adapter is has failed in which case you would need to just get any other pci nic to put in place.

well... the thing is we used this pc for lan gaming and stuff and it worked fine... don't know why the modem installation couldn't recognize it :(

Have you got the modem connected correctly. On most ADSL modems that I've seen there will be 2 or 3 ports. 1 port is where the phone line goes into. 1 port connects from the modem to the computer and the other is a console port which is for connecting into the modem to do configurations and what not.

Usually they only need drivers when connected via usb port. hmmm Check the rear and make sure about the input output being correct. Could be the on the ISP end. Also see if the lights indicate a internet connection.

What type of modem are you using? To me 'installation' would suggest some sort of USB hardware...
