I am not a gamer. I do not game. This is my chant to ward off the time pit that is gaming, but last night it failed me. I played TF2 until 3:30am.

Starcraft, Half-Life 2 (and Episode 1), half of Doom 3, and twice through the Warcraft 3 single-player campaign summarize my gaming experiences over the last three years. Yet Team Fortress 2 has sucked me in, and all I want today is another round of online fragging.

TF2 is what would happen if Chuck Jones and Jim Henson made an FPS together. All nine characters you can choose from are hilarious caricatures with fitting taunts, and the narrative is glib. You'll have your favorite character, but you'll be easily tempted to try other roles, and switch between respawns to cover weak points in your team (like five people yelling "MEDIC!" when no one chose that role).

On offense, the Scout bounces around like a 8-year-old on Jolly Ranchers, the Solider throws rockets at everything that moves, and the Pyro... well, it's not a pretty way to go. On defense, maybe you'll want to lob grenades as the Demoman, build turrets and supply depots as the Engineer, or mow the field with a chaingun as the two-ton Heavy. Or, play a support role as a medic (heal and blast needles), sniper (duh), or spy (disguise yourself or use invisibility to knife some lemmings). There's a character for every style of play, and you'll quickly try out the field as you rotate between moods and the needs of the round.

So join Icrontic's Steam group and follow me for some fragging fun tonight. I'll be the sniper bitch up on the ledge, getting stealth-stabbed by the spy.

I like playing the Pyro for some reason. His range sucks, and he's slow, but man I've had some epic moments, like saving one of my team's checkpoints from a nest of medic/sniper/heavy combos, by kamikaze'ing in there with flames a'blazin. Good times.

I got back from vacation yesterday and instantly got sucked into this game. As soon as I booted my PC, it seemed that everyone on my Steam friends list was playing TF2, so I joined in.

I had your sniper back, Keebs. Just not very skillfully. ;)

Oh man, there are so many awesome little touches that move this game up from "really good, and fun" to "all time best multiplayer deathmatch game". This is a great game.

When you die and it zooms in to show you the face of your killer - if there are little pieces of you in the picture (such as a blood smear) there will be a little callout box with an arrow pointing to the bloody bit saying "bits of you!" or "your head!" Hilarious

Whenever you die there's always a little positive message: "Look on the bright side, you scored more points this round as a Pyro than you ever have before!" or "You beat your old record of playtime as a Sniper", etc.

The graphics are such a refreshing change of pace. No metal corridors! No dark, evil robots on dark, evil, mechanical backgrounds. You can SEE your enemies. Everything is bright and colorful.

Each class has so much character. They are not faceless avatars, and yet you don't get so attached to them that you can't bring yourself to go on a suicide run as a spy or pyro.

Oh I could go on. All I'll say is: GET THIS GAME and JOIN THE ICRONTIC GROUP ON STEAM

This game is decidedly awesome. The pace just feels right and the graphics are awesome. I too am sitting here at working thinking about how much fun i could be having if i was just playing TF2. So far I think the engineer has been my favorite role.

I am also loving the new steam community. It tells you whose in what game and lets you join them in the game they are currently in. It was awesome when all of a sudden i was playing the game with a bunch of my friends and it was very easy to find the server they were on. The stats are a really great feature. It is very satisfying to see that you are getting better at a certain class and earning achievements. Last night I just earned the achievement of killing 10 people with one turret. (I think most of them came from Ghoosdum lol).

Two thumbs way up on this game, if you are on the fence about buying it, stop what you are doing and go buy the game on steam.

I've gotten my 'Achievement' for having played each of the characters sufficiently to learn them (the 'Top of the Class' achievement). Not long after, I earned the 'Team Medic' achievement for playing the Medic too much. I think my skills are best utilized in a non-combat role, even if it's not as action-packed some times. :)

Oh man I had some great times last night. I finally started playing as an Engineer, and found that I really like the class. The highlight of my Engineer career so far has been managed to successfully plant a teleporter exit right in the opposing team's Intelligence room. The game went very quickly after that:

Do I have to load HL2 again on my pc to get the steam game engine/account etc. working? Between that and the TF2 demo and other games I have loaded it will take up quite some space on the HD.
The reason I'm asking is I'm running on my 36G raptor and like to keep some space on it.

GHoosdum
24 Sep 2007, 2:36pm
You just need to instal Steam and purchase the Orange Box. Then when your purchase is verified (this took a whole agonizing day for me) you have the ability to install only TF2 if you want. You can save the HD space that way. It runs on the HL2 engine, so there is some overlap, but you don't have to install HL2 first.

primesuspect
24 Sep 2007, 2:37pm
you don't need to reload HL2 just to get into steam - steam is a separate program. Just get the latest version from steampowered.com and log in with your account info and you can buy the orange box.

Mas0n and I played last night with the crappiest team ever. It really cemented the fact that this is a team game that needs team strategy. In one example, we were defending control points. Our team consisted of mostly heavies, medics, and snipers rushing up to the front to try to hold off the other team in their resupply point. I kept calling for engineers and pyros to protect them from spies... It was a debacle. We got overrun in seconds.

Mas0n and I bailed to another server and got wrapped up in another crappy team. The opposing team really knew what they were doing. They ubercharged a pyro and rushed the intel room, and had another medic/pyro combo on standby. They capture the intel twice in a row within about three minutes.

We had no engineers in the intel room.... Crappy team :grumble:

24 Sep 2007, 3:32pm
I got autobalanced away from CB, Zanthian, and sharky at one point yesterday onto a team that really knew what it was doing. The one thing I noticed about the team was how well they coordinated activities over the voice chat. We defended the last capture point of the map for twenty minutes straight.

That was also the round that I got my "Grey Matter" badge. Twelve minutes between deaths as a sniper really racks up the headshot count. :p

I think I've developed enough of a grasp on the team concept to say that I would like to assemble a real team to go out and take on some of these other clans.

I would like to lead this team and also be our team's Engineer.

This is the initial idea I had:

Our medic needs to not only be able to run around behind an offensive player, but quickly determine the best teammate to receive the ubėrcharge and also be aggressive enough (and skilled enough) to defend himself using his offensive weapons. The best medics I've seen so far are the ones who play "rough" and also know exactly where to stand to avoid fire while feeding their heavy or pyro. Also, the best uses of medics I've seen have not necessarily been as feeders for Heavies - I've seen excellent use of a medic/pyro combination on several occasions.

Our dedicated Pyro's primary job is to defend the engineer - he also needs to be able to quickly identify potential spies, especially when the engineer is busy. The pyro must resist the urge to Kamikaze into a group of heavies or soldiers unless it is a desperate last ditch attempt to save a control point or something.

Our dedicated scout/soldier needs to be able to play offensively and have tight, twitch aiming. I've been in several games that were won almost immediately by a skilled scout.

Our dedicated sniper needs to be able to identify the ideal sniping spots and also be quick enough to switch to the SMG in order to tackle opponents close by, and be astute enough to avoid getting backstabbed by spies all the time.

Our dedicated spy needs to know how to effective utilize disguise to prevent detection - how to "act" like the role he is playing. - "Gee, why is there a medic charging balls out at our engineer and turrets?" Also needs to be able to effectively use the cloak and make his primary job eliminating enemy machinery and snipers.

Our dedicated Engineer needs to understand the pivotal role that teleporters can play and know the best spots to put them in. He also needs to understand how critical defensive turrets are. After the turrets are built, maintenance must take second place to defense via shotgun. I've found that the Engineer's pistol is also an effective long range weapon, and have gotten several headshots with it. Engineers also need to be able to identify potential spies and communicate effectively with his defensive pyro to help defend the turrets.

I've got some excellent nominations for who fills these roles for us. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Lincoln
24 Sep 2007, 10:26pm
I think it's not just a matter of having dedicated roles, but having a primary role and 1-2 secondary roles and have the team be cohesive and coordinated enough to adapt as the situation demands.

I think it's not just a matter of having dedicated roles, but having a primary role and 1-2 secondary roles and have the team be cohesive and coordinated enough to adapt as the situation demands.

He's right - the key that I've noticed in the most effective teams is that they have a lot of adaptability. There may be a few people who maintain dedicated roles (medic, engineer), but everyone else should be able to play several roles well and switch as the situation changes. Great coordination and communication is also key. The best play sessions I've engaged in had constant communication and well-coordinated assaults and defenses.

Also, if we're going to be building an Icrontic team, we'll need more than one person per role, since we're unlikely to all be able to play at the same time.

There was someone named "Martha Stuart" who took out FIVE of my teammates in rapid succession with a wrench. I saw the announcements scroll by and I was dumbfounded. That's when I decided I had to change servers
Hehehe, That's funny.
First time playing last night and I tended to sacrifice myself quite often by jumping into a group of the enemy with a flamethrower and torching them.
(When playing as Pyro)
Also tried Heavy,Sniper,Demoman,,Soldier and Scout.
Seems I did best as scout according to the skill chart the game keeps for you.
But I think I did best as Soldier with the rocket launcher. At least I enjoyed that one most.
Hehehe, If I did any good at all.
I'll definitely have to put more time in and learn some strategy.
Learning the maps is also very helpful.

Do you guys keep your AVG and Spybot S&D resident running while playing?
Seemed like quite a bit of lag at certain points last night.
Or is that just the steam engine and server being played on.
Funny, because the server scan said I was getting 92 ping on that server.
Which isn't bad as far as ping goes.
I play the original UT all the time on 80-120 ping servers and never lag.

It's the server. Source server needs a lot more horsepower than UT dedicated server - source dedicated servers keep track of physics and particle locations for everything going on, every object flying, etc.

There are quite a few underpowered source servers out there.

Well I am definitely best so far at the Medic... I love standing behind the big guys and pumping them up... I also can whip out the bonesaw and hack my way though if need be... My record kills as a medic is three I think... TF2 is just sick... Had fun tonight playing with Keebs, Prime and others... It's 11:30 now and I planned on going to bed at 9PM as I was hella tired... It was a long, long match against a very skilled defending team. In the end, with just 1:27 remaining, me (as a spy), Crazy Joe (as a medic) and another spy finally took the last control point. It was the most drawn out and tactical match I've ever played.

Great work to all involved :D

Demoman is the class I've played the least.

I really enjoy being an engineer, because I believe that tactical use of teleporters and dispensers can make or break a mission.

Of course, tactical use of medics/heavies can make or break a mission

But then, tactical use of spies can definitely make or break a mission.

Tactical use of snipers... oh crap, you get the idea. This is such a well balanced game, every class is totally useful and necessary :D

The combo strategy of medic and heavy is crucial. When I've played heavy and had a medic stick to me, I was able to annihilate a fair amount and push them back, but if all alone I would get taken out by demoman and snipers left and right. It got so frustrating after a while I switched to a medic and stuck with the heavy and/ or the engineer.

I primarily play Engineer, and I constantly marvel at the people who insist on running into an area that is covered by my sentry, getting mowed down by it (of course, trying to take a potshot at it), and then respawning and trying the same tactic again. And again. And again. As if somehow he'll be able to avoid the sentry fire if he just moves this way instead of that way....

I got pretty good with the soldier. Reached 16 kills in one life last night, but the only reason that happened was because my medic was AMAZING! Despite making people explode in < 1 second in TF with the sniper, I find that I'm not very good with it in TF2. I am, however, getting very good with the demoman which was a class I hated in TF. I'm also getting very good with the spy.

I will persist with my efforts in Sniping, however.

No, they're called scripts, and call game functions to automate tasks. They've been used and encouraged by developers on any game that owes its existence to Quake 1 in any way.

Disadvantage to the, otherwise really nice, internal team-speak option:

Asshats who use it to have lengthy conversations that (I guess) they think the rest of the team wants to hear.

I was on a server just now, along with Hawk, when these two chuckle-heads started going on to each other about how much better TFC is compared to TF2. A couple of times they talked over important team communication. After a couple of minutes, I asked them nicely to have their conversation off of the team channel, and the started insulting me and cursing at me. One of them even called me a 'construction worker' whatever that's supposed to mean.

It's too bad there is no way to enforce the channel's use for actual game-play. I just quit that server because they were just too annoying to stay in the same server with... That shouldn't happen...

OMG! Pyro's are freaking ridiculous now. They gotta fix them somehow and I have a few suggestions

*Less Ammo
*slower
*Less damage
*Shorter range
*Shorter burn duration
*Less health

I think tweaking the damage is the best of those options because right now 2 sec of flame and your dead and that is just crazy. Pyro's shouldn't be able to kill faster than a heavy. Fix that and they'ed be more balanced. Right now though a **** load of Pyro's will win any game end of story.

primesuspect
30 Sep 2007, 5:36am
Okay, so I think the consensus is that the Pyro is now a bit too powerful. Damage is insane, they seem to walk a little faster, and their range has been increased. A team consisting of 3-5 pyros and 3 medics can scythe through basically anything and there's just no stopping them.

GG tonight, fellas (and laaady). My computer eventually locked up, and I decided to call it a night after that.

Well, actually, I called it a night after I finished beating my computer with a stick and yelling at it for cutting me off before I'd gotten my fix. I'm sure that was the sensible thing to do. Felt right at the time.

Yea CB,
They were a couple of dopes. Even after you left they kept on so after another 5mins I jumped all over them and left also. I was hoping none of our group was there because of the way I cut loose on those idiots.
BTW, thnx for all the uber health bud!
I had a great time playin last night with all you guys.
I did notice being killed by Gen Keebs quite a few times and prime.
Dogs were always jumpin on the opposing team just to kill the slow Hawk! J/K
Come to find out my mouse was blinking red begging me for a charge most of the night. It was almost dead because I played 5 hrs during the day (then eat, sleep for an hr or two, back to the game) from 7pm till 1 am. Hehehe, When I finished I couldn't walk (knees were close to being locked up) Shoulders were in an excruciating knot..etc,etc,etc. through the rest of my body! LOL
My wife came in and asked me if I was OK a couple of times after hearing me yelling and pounding the keyboard for more speed!
And damning all those that killed me previously. Hahaha What fun!
I think it went best when someone took the lead and choreographed the attacks or defenses of the team as a whole though..
Seemed we won the most then.

Are all you guys using Sledges Server Teamspeak now?
If so, What do you do for the game strategy? As far as hearing someone calling the team to attack or defend?
I can see that it will work if we had a complete team of our own group, but that rarely happens.
CB, I think that's probably our answer to the knotheads that don't understand the object of voice channel for strategy of the game.
Then again just blocking those individuals on the speech channel would work too. Or just leaving the server as we did. I wish the server admin would just kick the offending players, but that prob wouldn't happen.
Keebs, I saw the pics of you falling through the ground. Cool looking pics! What a view! Interesting seeing the map from that angle..
prime, Saw your pics too, I love when I get killed and it shows head here, leg here, more bits there!!! Sooo humiliating... hehehe

I think I picked up a few more Achievements yesterday though, Impenetrable Defense came from one of the rounds with Keebs I'm pretty sure.

And yes, the Pyro has been made insane.

I guess you guys started playing after I left... I missed the action again!

We did get to play with Hawk for a while though. In one round he was the last man left alive during sudden death. When the enemies finally took him out, the last thing we hear over teamspeak before level change is, "I just got killed by Helen Keller!"

See Hawk, you mastered the game's short learning curve and now you get to be the last man standing when we get pwned. ;)

Hey all. First, not sure if I have been given an invite yet but if not, please do send.

Second, I cannot play the game yet due to needing a better PCI-E video card. What would you peeps recommend for playing this game? I'm not a big gamer so really, all I need is one that will play this game at 1680X1050 with high settings. I don't want to break the bank but get something that will handle this game comfortably. Also, I'm only running a 480W Tt PSU.

I'm running the game with a 7600GT. I left it at default setting, and frankly it looks great at 1024x768; with the cartoony graphics in this game the resolution doesn't seem to make much of a difference to my eyes.

Keebler! I am having the same clipping problem as you now. Doesn't really bother me so much as it only affects ME when I die, and it's kind of funny that if anyone above me dies they all rain down through the ceiling and then float around on the floor!

Just wanted to let you know that A) you are not the only one and B) I have an 8800GTS so it's not just a GPU/driver issue.

That's what I'm doing, too. My native resolution is 1600x1200, but in FPS games, I can't notice that I'm not using the LCD's native res. I could probably crank up the res a bit, but I haven't bothered (I run 1600x1200 in HL2, so I'm assuming I could in TF2).

But, It just ate me up to be killed by Helen Keller!!!!
I busted out laughing hysterically when I saw the screen say YOU WERE KILLED BY HELEN KELLER! That's when I humbly told everyone.

Very good, thanks for the suggestions all. I came across a used Asus 7900GT for $150 CDN just yesterday. Not sure if that's a little pricey or not for a discontinued card but I think it was in the $220 range when it was new. I'll have to do a bit of digging to see if it's worth it.

Edit - Found that the card retailed for $350 when introduced, I think I may have to snatch it up. What do guys think? Fair price?

As expected I had my @ss handed to me over and over. Damn you Thrax, everytime I turn around you're putting a knife in my back....annoying as all heck. I really do need to practice and I feel I'm way behind the rest of you. Never got into playing TF1 so it's pretty much like starting from scratch.

It should get easier as I learn the maps as I was running around not knowing where everything is. Would be nice to have some practices and get some strategies down. Also, I need to change my crosshairs. Was having a heck of a time with the default crosshair.

Oh yeah, that card I bought was actually an Asus EN7900GS/TOP which is an overclocked version of the base GS model. It is actually much faster than the GT but there isn't really any room left to o/c it more. I'm happy with it's performance and seems to more than sufficient to run most games out there on the highest resolution and detail settings.

I never played TF1, Terry. I know your pain. Knowing the maps helps. But I kept getting knifed in the back by sir Thrax as well :-/

I had a distinct feeling last night that Thrax's strategy was more geared towards stabbing me and keebler in the back than actually attempting to capture points for his team ;)

Thrax
2 Oct 2007, 3:08pm
Your feeling is incorrect. My goal last night was to take out engineering objects, but since you like to whore turrets and Keebs likes to camp the entrance with a Demo, it equated to me stabbing both of you quite often.

Spies are terrible flag cappers; great chaos-causers. In 2Fort, there was a time on the balcony when I cleared it out of 3 snipers and a heavy, allowing our team to move across mid. It was great.

Anyhow, my strategy for spy is pretty pointed (Which I won't detail; I have priority targets and destinations for all the maps), but you two were kept trying to stop me, so I figured I might as well go down stabbing.

primesuspect
2 Oct 2007, 3:15pm
as an engineer, what else can I do but whore turrets once my teleports and dispenser are up? :p

Really there was a point where I felt that the backstab you did me wasn't strategically sound (I can feel your facial muscles twitching)... At some point I said to you: "Was it worth it, Thrax"? Because I knew you went out of your way to stab me.

You said: "Definitely"

Come on, your integrity as a Spy for Blue is not in question here, just admit you went out of your way to kill me at least one time

At that point, I remember that, I was trying to get to your sentry gun, but there were about 4 people up there all spamming their weapons. So I had two options:

1) Go down without destroying anyone/anything
2) Stab someone to atleast nab a kill from the effort

You were the closest person. If ANYONE asked me that question, the answer will always be "Yes." It's very satisfying to stab someone or sap a turret.
