View Full Version : 'Windows Messenger' wants to update?

As of late, every time I reboot, I get a pop-up window asking if I want to update windows messenger (as seen in the attached pic). The thing is, I have the service disabled, and it has been since I built this machine. MSN Messenger has also been removed.

Any idea on why/how I still get this? Any thoughts as to weather I'd be doomed to spamming if I 'accept' this update?

There's a tweak for that but I'm too tired to go trolling thru a zillion pages of guides. Go to http://www.tweaktown.com , look for their XP guide (there's 3 guides, it's in either the 1st or 2nd) - they talk all about removing Messenger (more or less permanently) and fixing the subsequent OE slowdown. If you don't have it fixed tomorrow I'll link the right pages.

Single malt 12 yr old Glen Ord can be blamed for reducing my response level :)

If you're talking about the Messenger service, it has nothing to do with Windows Messenger. Maybe you should just do what it asks :p

You could also go to Install/Remove Programs, Windows Components, and remove Windows Messenger that way.

Repeat, The Messenger Service has nothing to do with Windows Messenger.

It was uninstalled a long time ago, using the same meathod you specify. I called it "MSN Messenger" before... musta been cause it was soo damn early... *shrug*

Indeed. Don't let that service confuse you. Though it's a good job you've got it disabled, as its a whole other nuisance.

Exactly. That should rid you of those update popups.

Removing Windows Messenger from the add/remove windows components list, does pretty much next to nothing. The only way I know to fully get rid of Windows Messenger is to do what DanG suggested.
