View Full Version : Anybody from the Pittsburgh area?
(rolls eyes...)
Man I hated my last gig up north in Duhlaware near Philly..
I swore I would never work north of the Mason Dixon line again. Felt right at home when I blew into Memphis on my next contract. Wrapped that one and now.. (long sigh....) Looks like I'm a gypsy again.
So I have two open I can take right now. One here in dallas where I am staying with friends or a MUCH better and MUCH better paying gig up in Pittsburgh. I mean the money is crazy good on the Pittsburgh gig for sure. But I'm really not sure I want to head up there. I have never been to pittsburgh though so if any of you you have and want to share your thoughts here then lets do it.

I hate Pittsburgh with a passion but I don't hate it because of the way the city is or anything. I just don't like it since I'm from New York and this is a big difference. Anyway, depending on where in Pittsburgh you are, life isn't that bad. Suburbs are mostly rich compared to other cities; weather is usually bearable, including in the winter (though it gets on my nerves that it's almost always cloudy and dark). If you're the type of person that likes to go out and do things, try new foods etc, this isn't the place. There's not much of a night life unless you go into the city. As far as food goes, there pizza, chinese, etc, but not many new things to try (like different cultures and stuff). Ask me if you have specific questions...

I'm from pittsburgh.
It's a pretty interesting city...i left when i was about 16 for college, so I never got to do any of the nightlife junk.
Roads/traffic are pretty bad during rush-hour, but that'll depend a lot on where you live and work.

I'm from pittsburgh, but at college right now, otherwise I'd love to show you around the city. Not sure what your looking for, but if your up for bar hopping and the "club" scene check out the south side. Thats where most of the Pitt, CMU, and Duquesne students go. Stay away from the hill district, and theres some really sweet shopping in the strip district. If your into touristy stuff ride the incline and umm try to figure your way around the city. The traffic blows, other than that pgh is cool

Come on you guys gotta be more specific. I gotta for instance pick a place to live BEFORE i get there so for example WHERE IS THE HILL district I am supposed to avoid?
I will be working downtown but would rather live in the suburbs or out of town unless I can get a apartment close by. I ahve had differant folks say to live North east and West of the city... And you guys say the S. side is the party place.... (rolls eyes...)
What PARTS of town EXACTLY should I avoid etc..
THANKS

belive me, ask anyone around pittsburgh, they know what the hill is. Theres really nothing to avoid in pittsburgh, the hill is just a bad neighborhood right beside the city, kind of a ghetto.

your questions are just as vague as our answers. "Tell me everything about the city" isn't easily responded to.
squirrel hill and point breeze are nice neighborhoods...not too bad of a commute to downtown either.
I never said anything. The first question was sorta your general thoughts. is it a good or bad place sort of and why? is it bad because of weather or traffic or is it a dirty city etc... Would you MOVE BACK if you didnt live there now and why for example.
But when someone says specifically DON'T GO TO SOMEPLACE!!! Then tell me EXACTLY where that is for example.... If I have to pick a place to live from here then sorta clue me in on what areas to try and look at or stay away from etc...
If the suburbs just out of the city to the North are nice and the drive isnt to bad for example NAME SOME for me to look at ! If most the apartments in a certain area are going to be shabby and the area isnt really the safest LET ME KNOW. If the areas to say the EAST side of Pittsburg are prettier and there is a big park to walk a dog or its heavily wooded etc... Tell me.
I'm going to work downtown but a drive really won't kill me so 45 minutes or so in traffic is cool. How far does that get me away from Downtown? Do you know of any areas CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN where I could get an apartment thats pretty safe for example.
I mean gee I could talk a long time about Dallas or the most the towns I have lived in and tell ya tons of stuff about areas tolive and not live etc... Trust me I can figure where to party when I get there. I am more concerned about the quality of life and living in Pittsburgh. All you guys say you used to live there right. Would you move back and WHY? Orrrrrr why not etc... I'm not there and this would be a time still to talk me out of it if you wanted to. The weather is mild in the winter. Pretty darn cold in the winter from the checking I have done. Lots of rain and lots of cloudy days also which some wouldn't like. There seems to be a lot of canoeing and white water rapids for kayaks etc.. What about hunting and fishing for example?
Cheers

What is your budget, what can you afford as far as living goes? If money is no object, Fox Chapel is like (fill in the blank). If you got a limit, Moon Twp, where I live, is a pretty rich area being close to the airport, but it's not exactly the place to be if you're going to want entertainment. If you want entertainment, Monroeville, I thought, was a fun area. There's lot's of things to do and theres a fair amount of mixture of cultures so you'll find pretty much any type of friends you're looking for. Downtown commute from Moon is about 40 minutes by bus, 20 by car with no traffic, and same goes for Monroeville.
As far as weather goes, I told you I'm comparing to the suburbs of NYC which is where I used to live, so it's pretty mild to me. I said it's almost always cloudy here, which is true, and that's probably one of the things I hate most about Pittsburgh. Lately, though, the weather has been warm and sunny, and this is usually not the case at this time of the year. It could be global warming, at least that's what I think it is. It's been varying a lot lately too. For example we had about 2'' of rain yesterday in my area in about an hour, and then it just stopped and it was sunny the rest of the day.

I'm from mt. lebanon which i guess would be considered a "somewhat wealthy" neigborhood compared to others around it. Its pretty much middle to middle-upper class people living there. Without traffic you can be downtown in about 8 mins.

I don't really know much about the neighborhood, but Mt Lebonan, Montour, and Upper St Clair have the biggest high schools I've ever seen. We went to a genetics conference for AP Bio to UPC and they have pool tables in their cafeteria! Their lobby was literally bigger than a fifth of Moon High School...
