I'm pretty sure my High School 'Life Sciences' textbook, which was written in the 80s, already told me that... Why are they reporting on it like they didn't already know?

I thought that was the know purpose of the appendix already? In any case, I'm disappointed that this wasn't a video where it said you needed to turn up the volume, then half-way through a scary picture appeared.
