Nice 4-by Derek. My next vehicle will be a Jeep. Unfortunately I can't afford it right now and have to rely on the 'Vic. I've been wanting a Jeep for about a year now. Spring fever down here is killing me. Got any more off-roading pics to tide me over?

A month ago I did some repair work on my truck. For those who remember(I am not sure if I posted my truck here before in this particular thread) I had damage to my front end and needed to replace my Grill and bumper and then just toss my old Air Dam. But I also got damage to my stock mirrors which gave me an excuse to upgrade to a more sporty look, and here is the prize so far...

Yeah, it needs to be washed, but while the pollen is dence, I ain't waisting my time.

derek: is that an '80? A friend of mine has one of those and it's a pretty decent truck. The SAS Toyota is a much better off-roader than the IFS. Are you a member of the toyota board over @ ORC (off-road.com)?

How'd you get the truck upright from in that gully?

the truck is an 81.
i rolled there (rubicon) at an offroad event. so there was tons of help around.
just winched me over and pulled the truck back.

I found these pics while cleaning my room... I figured you guys might be interested, so I scanned them.

This is the car that I got rid of to get the 560 I drive now. My grandfather bought this car used sometime in the late '80s or early '90s, and he drove it for a number of years. Then it sat behind his shop for at least 3 years before he decided that he was going to sell it. At the time, I was 13, and I told him I wanted it. He was going to give it to me, but my dad made me work for it, so I spent the next summer working for my grandfather's business.

Anyhow, I finally brought it home when I was 15, and started work on it. It was originally from Sweden, so it was totally rusted out. My grandfather didn't know this when he bought it because the ******* that sold it to him duct taped over the rust in the trunk and spray painted it black, and then had the car undercoated a couple of times.

Partially because of the rust, and partially because the car was just too damn slow (I never did drive it, but I've looked up the specs), I traded it to my dad for his 560SEL. He then sold this car last year.

It's a 1967 250SE Coupe; I'll look up the specs and post them when I get a chance, but it had a 2.5L I6, and did 0-60 in about 13s with the automatic transmission. Manuals were somewhat faster, but still took 11-12s.

Thanks. I sometimes wish I hadn't sold it, and then I remember the rust and the (lack of) A/C and acceleration, and I'm happy that I did... gorgeous car tho, especially in person.

Well, here's a couple more. My grandfather finally got rid of his Range Rover yesterday. It is (well, was) a 2000 Range Rover Holland & Holland edition, of which only a few hundred were made.

I can't say I'm sorry to see it go, because frankly, I'm not. I didn't really like it. I've driven it, and it drives like a truck, which is why I don't like it. Vague steering, crappy brakes, and it would probably accelerate faster if I got out and pushed.

So... I finally got him to test drive a Porsche Cayenne Turbo. It took him about 5 minutes to talk himself into getting it :D Here's a couple of the Range Rover in front of the Porsche dealership, and one of the Porsche at the office. I'll grab some better pics of the Porsche when I get a chance.

Heh, yeah I can't say that it's the best looking vehicle I've ever seen... BUT it's hard to argue with a 5500lb truck that does 0-60 in 5.6s and has a top speed of 165mph... :D

If high performance is the goal, why in the heck get an SUV or truck? I don't get it.

Because it's just cool, Leo.

Sweet ride that is.

How much it set him back?

Geeky1
8 Apr 2004, 09:57pm
Rot: With the options that's on it, I'm not sure. The base MSRP is $89,900 or so tho.

Leo: Basically what Rot said. They want a SUV, and it makes no sense for them (like most other SUV owners) to have something like the Range Rover. The Range Rover is one of the top 4 civillian trucks in the world in terms of off road capability (The Hummer H1, Mercedes Unimog, and Mercedes Gelandewagen being the other three), and all the stuff that makes it great off road makes it drive like sh*t on-road.

The Porsche SUV, on the other hand, does both very well. What I've read is that with some decent mud tires (instead of the 18" high performance low profile things that are on it stock or the 20"s on my grandparents') it will easily hold its own against even the new Range Rover off road, but the Turbo Cayenne has lapped Hockingheim (iirc... It may have been one of the other German race tracks) faster than Porsche's own Boxster S. That is insane. The Cayenne weighs like 5500lbs and has a high center of gravity. The Boxster weighs maybe 3000 or 3400 at most, and is a mid-engine, rwd sports car.

You have to remember that Porsche put their reputation on the line with the Cayenne. You can imagine the kind of ridicule they got from the majority of the automotive enthusiast community for building a SUV. If they hadn't gotten this one right, their reputation would have been tarnished pretty badly. Luckily for them, from everything I've read, and my own experience with it, they not only got it right, they nailed it head on. The Cayenne Turbo is the best SUV on the face of the planet, period, IMO. :)

Rot Katze
8 Apr 2004, 10:50pm
Well, it sure is priced like a Porsche. No reputation on the line in that area :)

289Mustang
9 Apr 2004, 02:21am
Glad I'm not the only one that thought is is ugly.

Porsche did hurt their reputation by building an SUV even if it is good. When a person thinks of Porsche they think of high performance sports car, not an SUV. It pulled the name from pinnacle of the industry back towards the rest of the SUV making masses.

Does the Cayenne have the same suspension that the Toureg has where the ride height is adjustable based on terrain. I know the Toureg and Cayenne are basically the same thing with different engines and so I figued they prolly had the same suspension. The Toureg stock can have more ground clearance than a Hummer.

Geeky1
9 Apr 2004, 04:01am
It depends on which Cayenne. The Turbo has an air suspension that'll go from something like 10" to 6 or 4 or something like that of ground clearance, and 3 damping stiffness modes. In the normal and comfort settings, it's quite comfortable. IMO, the "comfort" setting is a bit too soft, but the normal setting is fine. The sport setting is fine too, but at that setting, it rides like my grandparents' SL (that is, the ride is very stiff).

Buddy J
9 Apr 2004, 05:32pm
Cool. I personally like the Cayenne/Toureg. I think they're snazzy.

This isn't the first time Porsche has "risked their reputation." In fact, they've done it multiple times in the past. The Porsche/VW 914 and 914-6 was a great example of how in the past they've done something radical that was a success. While the business model they used casued pricing problems which led to the programs end, they still created a great mid-engined sports car that was rather cheap. It sold all over the world as a VW/Porsche except for in the US where it was a Porsche (due to people buying the name) unless you grabbed a 914-6 model which was straight up called a Porsche. Go to a SCCA meet and check out how many of these are running cones and you'll see that the car's popularity hasn't fallen off.

Next, look at the water cooled Porsches. Starting with the 924, a parts bin engineered car from Porsche, VW and Audi, they made a car that was totally different from the aircooled stablemates. These cars too proved to be quite popular despite "not driving like a 911." Indeed, they're more balanced and more practical.

So in effect, the Cayenne isn't really a big step. Their reputation wasn't on the line, they just were doing something that was different. If their rep was on the line and the Cayenne somehow failed, would men in mid-life crisis all of a sudden quit buying red 911's? Of course not. It's German engineering people. They don't allow failure or crap quality.

Heh, actually last time I rode a bike was about ten years ago when I lived in California. My guess is that'd you'd have to spend a decent amount of money to get a bike worthy of putting disc brakes on. They're certainly not on the ones at Wal-Mart where I work :D

Right now, it's about $1000.00, for a bike worth getting discs on. But that price has been slowly dropping.
I work pt time in a bike shop, and at cost, my Ellsworth cost $5200. It's worth the discs :thumbup

Well, my parents offered me a Grand Prix GTP a few weeks back, and I thought about it for a while, but they seem to have changed their minds, so the point is now moot, I think.

Regardless, beyond the fact that it's front wheel drive (front wheel drive sucks- oversteer > understeer as long as it's nice and predictable the way it is in the 'Benz), my main complaint is the dash illumination. The monochrome red night illumination just doesn't do it for me. IMO, it's really, really awful. I was discussing this with someone the other day, and I mentioned that I think that the way the dash is lit on my car, and most other Mercedes (at least the older ones, anyhow), not to mention a lot of other older cars, is the best way there is. I wanted to show them what I meant, but I couldn't, because no one has taken pics of the dash on the W126 chassis Mercedes at night (or during the day) apparently.

So, I did it.

The top one is with the flash on, so you can see what it looks like during the day, and the bottom is what it looks like at night. I had the key in the ignition in the "run" position but without the engine running, so I could get the warning lights in the pictures as well.

There are a number more warning lights on this thing than you see on most cars, and I think it warrants an explanation, since the pictograms aren't necessarily very clear, unless you know what you're looking at.

The triangular light near the gas gauge is the reserve warning light.

The row along the bottom, from left to right is:
1- high beam indicator
2- battery charge warning light
3- parking brake warning light
4- brake pad wear level warning light (the pads have sensors in them; the light comes on when the pads are worn out)
5- oil level warning light (the light comes on when it's down 1qt)
6- coolant level warning light

Then we have the external temperature indicator. It says 88*F at 9:00 at night (the clock is an hour behind, and I don't feel like turning the knob to re-set it) because the thermistor is mounted on the radiator support frame. Since the car has been parked and the engine was still a bit warm, its reading is about 20*F too high.

7- windshield washer fluid level warning light
8- bulb warning light (if one of your bulbs is burned out or is not the correct type, the light turns on)
9- abs warning light
10- srs (airbag system) warning light
11- oxygen sensor warning light

The only other thing to note is the "economy" gauge on the bottom of the fuel/oil pressure/water temp gauge cluster. I *think* it measures manifold vacuum. Regardless, it spends most of its time in the red zone when I'm driving... :D

Anyhow, here are the pics:

Oh, and here's my dad's new car, which he picked up yesterday (which is when I found out about it). It's a 2002 E55 AMG. It's got a hand built 5.5L V8 with around 350hp. 0-60 takes about 5.3s, the top speed is 155mph (electronically limited), and the 1/4 is something below 14s, I believe, although I'd have to go look it up to be sure.

Well, then we have a minor problem. ;D But the chances of it burning out are very low, because it's only on when another bulb goes out, and only until you change that bulb. So it might see what, 48hrs of use in a year, at most?

Does that make a Dodge Neon an E-Class Daimler-Benz?
I drove one this week as a rental on a business trip. I don't know the quality and reliability of the Neon; but apart from that, it's really pathetic. It's a wonder the Japanese makers haven't taken more of the US auto market.

(No offense to any Neon owners here. I've had a couple cars in my past that made the Neon seem great by comparison! ;D )

Honestly, I think the only decent American economy car is probably the Focus. Everything else ranges from bad to just plain awful.

HOWEVER, if you want an E class, but don't want to spend the $48,795-$100,000+ on one, get a Chrysler 300C. It's got the same rear suspension, the same transmission (at least on the hemi, not sure about the smaller ones), and it's supposed to be a great car. I'd rather have one of the Hemis than a Grand Prix GTP, but "it has too much power"

Ahem, back to topic. Unfortunately, I'd agree with you Geeky about American economy cars. Hey, we are heads and tails better than we were in the dark days of the Detroit 70's (quality, innovation, reliability, engineering in the garbage can), but we still can't quite seem to keep pace with the Japanese in quality.

I would love to see some of our Fords going over to you guys. The newest model ford is called the BA, came out last year.
The previous model, the AU was very bland and did nothing for the masses.

The BA performance range is nothing short of a total revival. Just recently Ford Came out with a new 6 cyl Turbo making 270Kw called the F6 Typhoon.

http://www.fpv.com.au/index.asp?target=index.asp&link_id=2.492&type_id=34

The first 6cyl turbo came out in the XR range with 240Kw. Since this came out there have been lots of mods produced and it is not unusual to make them produce 300Kw or more.

In Aus, Ford have listened to the masses and got it right this time. Aussies love their V8's with power AND rear wheel drive. With the turbo models a lot of 6 cyl enthusiasts have also been satisfied.

On a good tank (Highway with out me hot-dogging)... 44 MPG.

12 gallons per fill = just a bit over $20.00

Ginipig, yeah, I saw another 300Z the other day, and the spoiler is basically the same. The 300Zs are nice looking cars, but I think the back end makes it kind of difficult to design a really, really good looking spoiler to put on it. It certainly doesn't look bad, it just kind of breaks up the lines of the car, IMO.

The wheels look outstanding, though. I have to admit that I don't like the body kit too much, although it's probably the best looking one I've seen. But look; if it does a 10.x second 1/4, I'm not really going to argue with it. :D I just like the "sleeper" look better. But, you know, like I said, with that kind of performance, you could stick an illuminated Oscar Mayer Weiner on the top and I'd probably let it slide... :D

I get 12MPG (city . . . I call it "extreme city" because I do a good bit of 1-mile trips on a cold engine). I've never had a full tank of mainly highway so I cannot say what I would average but judging from the few times I have filled up and then gotten on the highway almost immediately I would say I'd average 16-17MPG . . . give or take. I don't use premium, though, I use 89 octane. I can run 87 octane but then my Hemi would run in low-performance mode.

What is premium in Cali? Here in TX it's 92 octane.

My Pride and Joy: 92' FairladyZ

I totaled my 240sx within 3 months of getting my license. I was 16 (and understandably reckless) at the time. My dad took me down to the closest SkipBarber's Racing school (1 day is all you need,) and it was there that my passion for cars started. My next car was this gem (back then it was close to biting the dust.) For the past 5 yrs, I've painstakingly prepped it for auto-x, drift (on diff occassions of course,) till it possessed some pretty mean bragging rights. The aesthetics were recently added a few months ago. Despite the ungodly amount of cash I've spent on it, I don't plan to stop working on it any time soon. What can I say? It's my lifelong obsession.

I'm going to say it is 93 since Geeky said it is 91 or 92 in Cali because I Believe Houston has 2 octane higher than Cali does, and I know I've never seen 94 octane gas.

It should be 93 in Houston too, although 92 does sound right also... hrm

:Pwned: is right... that's pretty bad, you know that? Nothing wrong with liking that 300Z... it's a nice car, but claiming it's yours, when it's... not, is pretty sad...

Aaaanywho, I managed to get a couple of pics of the Cayenne today. I forgot to grab any of the interior , so I'm hoping they drive it over again tomorrow. You've gotta see the interior on this thing. It's really very nicely done.

And yes, I'll be the first to say it. It's got a bit of an ugly face (it's not as bad in person as it is in the pics) but that huge grill supplies air to the radiator, the intercoolers, and, I believe, the front brakes, so it's there for a reason. Also, with a 0-60 time of about 5.2s, I'm not one to question Porsches' engineers...

Buddy Jesus just bought an '85 Supra. It has a 6M-GE swap (190hp of smooth torque goodness, with a 5 spd.). It makes me very, very happy. I got to drive it. Pics to follow tomarrow when we pick it up. :D

Just drove it home. I gotta be careful with it cuz it goes faster than most cars I've driven. It's too easy to speed. Also, the LSD makes for fun driving in the rain. It's not perfect by any means but I wanna get it back to lookin nice. Has dents and some small rust spots but I'll get all that fixed at the body shop when I get front end fixed.

The leather seats in it are super comfortable but very VERY worn out. I'll toss them for some Sparcos or something.

Gotta fix:
1. headlights- They only both come on with the high beams.
2. wipers- the motor is jankey and the blades are old.
3. drivers door window needs re-aligned.
4. front end where deer banged it up.

Oh, and the radio doesn't work. I'll get a nice CD player for it.

Garg has pictures of me lookin like an idiot next to it. He'll post them if he remembers.

My 03 Ford Focus ZX3 hatchback 5spd. Cost was roughly $12,000 new. Yeah its not fast, its quick ... its light and has alot of torque (at low rpms). It also handles very well, I have an Eibach suspension setup with only the sway bars left to install. I test drove this and most of the other compact cars in the same price range (Civic, Corolla, Lancer, Sunfire, Cavalier, Scions etc.) and not only did this have the best price for its features, it was also the best handling and had the strongest engine. I'm happy with the car.

I have had it a year and already put on 30k miles. Got the extended warranty, 5y/100k miles. No problems with the car yet.

Go ahead and flame me for having a Ford.

As some of you may know, I spent most of this summer working at a Boy Scout camp. Every year in the second to last week camp, we have Christmas in July and people draw names out of a hat. Well, one of the guys that works for me traded around until he got my name, and then went out and bought these for my 1997 Geo Prizm (bought new in 1996).

I don't know if this qualifies as rice, bling, or some mixture of the two. Don't worry, they're coming off in a couple weeks. They have to stay on for a decent amount of time due to Christmas rules: when you receive a gift, you must either wear it, eat it, use it, or abuse it.

Well, Saturday I got the bug and went out and bought a new truck

1995 Toyota Tacoma Regular Cab/Short bed 4x4

Red/Gray, 22RE 4 cyl w/ 110k miles (rebuilt at 95k because the seals went bad...sat in storage for 2 years due to military guy owning it), 5 spd manual, 31x10.50R15 Bridgestone Duelers (trading for BFG A/T's 30x8.50R15's soon)

It's got some dings/dents/scratches...but after all, it is a truck. And you can't beat $3500 with a stick :p and it gets 25-28 mpg

Sometime in the future I plan a 3-4" suspension lift and put some 33's on it as well as a Warn winch and a 4.88 rear gear

GHoosdum

Judging by the flex he's (not) getting, I'd say he's just using blocks for the lift. Blocks don't add anything to suspension travel, just to the height. Bigger tires alone can only get you so far.

I posted my new truck this morning when I didn't have much time, I plan on doing a lot of work on that truck, it is a 1980 Ford F-100 Flare side. I have always wanted a truck with a wood bed (not sure why just have) and when I saw this I had to jump on it. And yes that truck is a tank all 3309ibs of it rolled over my foot the other day. My wife laughed so hard when she saw that I was ok, (I the parking break was not working, it was the first day that I got it home and she was just telling me to park it in front of the neighbors house  )

I'll post pics as I fix it up, but I make no promise's on how long it takes me before I even touch the truck as I am kind of busy all the time.

Time for some good old American muscle... my dad's Firebird got back from paint a few weeks ago, and he just brought it home today. It's not done yet (needs an interior and some other stuff), but here it is so far...

It's a '71 Formula 400; the original engine has been pulled and stored; it now has a 455 in it. Edelbrock aluminum heads, new intake manifold, etc. I don't know the details, but it's supposed to have about 450hp atm. I do know that he's got headers for it in the garage, and he's going to get the Ram Air set up at some point...

My brother and I went with him to get it from work... he took it out on the freeway on the way back, and I tried to keep up with him just for the hell of it. I couldn't. -_- I asked him if he'd floored it and he said "not quite"... even so, it was still pulling away from me pretty fast. This was to be expected of course, but you know...

Yeah... the early 2nd generation (1970.5-1981; "early" being 1970.5-1973) F-Bodies (Camaros & Firebirds) were some of the best cars this country has ever produced as far as I'm concerned. They look good, they can be made to be very fast, and they can be set up to handle insanely well. Putting aluminum heads on them and possibly moving the battery to the trunk apparently gets you a near 50/50 weight distribution, and the suspension can be modified to generate >1.0G of grip on a skidpad.

So basically, a properly set up 1970.5-1973 Firebird or Camaro will eat a new Corvette Z-06 for breakfast. Or so I'm given to understand. Not bad for a car that's 30-odd years old. :D

I really don't know what you're on about - I shall observe the rev counter and see if it gives me any clues. All I know is that it has a steering column spindle mounted cruise control that actually works quite well. And that, once I'm moving (this car's heavy) once I put my foot down, I can actually smoke quite a few motors when overdrive kicks in :D I love doing that.

Oh, and by the way... I'm driving over to your house and stealing your bumpers and your headlights.

Geeky, you about made me cry with those '71 Firebird pictures! My first car was a 1971 Firebird, 350 C.U. Esprit, same exact color as what your dad has. My father purchased it brand new in 1971 for $3000. I purchased it from my dad in 1978 for $1100 (he helped with fuel and insurance). In 1982, after a new coat of factory original paint, modifications of Holley carburetor, Headmen headers, and large pipe dual exhaust, a fuel line ruptered and the car burned! I'm still upset about that 23 years later. She was a very fast car, but only strait line. GM didn't seem to have a clue about suspension back then.

So, my poor Camry (http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=8739&postcount=38) died.
And, my poor 122s (http://short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=91846&postcount=187) still won't start. I had to leave it with my parents.

Luckily, my Dad gave me his old Explorer. It was nice to have a larger car to move my things in, and the four wheel drive for the snowy weather. Too bad the transmission tendered its letter of resignation a few miles away from town...

Heh heh heh. Wait'll you guys see what I get to drive to school. It's so uncool, it's gone right back to cool (which is, oddly, true). It's not mine, but more of a spare vehicle (and it can pull our boat without blowing its tranny - something our Bravada cannot do :p).

Pics tomorrow (too dark now). It's even been dubbed a special name by my friends, and the graphic artist at my parents' work made us a sign :D

Err, ok, so it's not quite "tomorrow," but oh well. Yeah, back when everyone (for some reason) started saying uber in real life, one of my friends dubbed The Van (yes, capitals) the "Uber Van." My other friends had no idea what it meant or why he said it, but they went along with it. The graphic artist at my parents' work found out about it, thought it was funny, and made a sign for us. We have 2 of them, both magnetic, that aren't usually there unless we take it somewhere where people would find it amusing.

Like I said, this thing is so uncool it's cool. A massive engine, curtains, lights, carpet, a bed... you name it. I now present to you: The Uber Van.

Now that we've established that we're each girly men in our own ways, here's a better picture of my car. My boss said that when he was growing up, RX-7s were girl cars. Too bad you can't tell your boss to f#$* off. I do remain quite secure in my masculinity, however.

Leonardo
9 Mar 2005, 05:38pm
My boss said that when he was growing up, RX-7s were girl cars. The RX-7 didn't come out on the US market until 1979. (Your boss must be young.) At that time, it would blow the doors off almost any stock American car except the Corvette. Sure, there were a few cars in the sport coupe category that had more straight line accelleration than the RX-7, but none in its price range that could match its all around performance of speed, accelleration, and handling. My Dad had two RX-7s. When they were initially offered on the market, they were quite a bargain.

Gargoyle
9 Mar 2005, 05:49pm
And they still are a bargain :). The blue book value on this car is somewhere between dirt and cheap, and I got it for a few hundred under book value (granted it has a broken stereo, which I'd replace anyway, and A/C, which I don't need around here). Yeah, my boss is young, somewhere in his 30s I think.

I was reading some old Car & Driver articles, apparently the only car that held a candle to the RX-7 at the time was the Nissan Z, and it pretty much came down to a matter of preference between the two. The RX-7 handles like a dream though, and its flat torque curve makes it really responsive. I don't think there's much more room on my face for a bigger grin if this one was a turbo.

'85 Supra w/ swapped 6M-GE, fancypants exhuast, and fat tires
2788lbs/200hp = 13.9lb/hp

'87 RX-7 w/ stock 13B
2570lbs/146hp = 17.6lb/hp

edited for Supra weight and RX-7 power

(must... swap... turbo motor...)

'85 Supra w/ swapped 6M-GE, fancypants exhuast, and fat tires
3000lbs/200hp = 15lb/hp

'87 RX-7 w/ stock 13B
2570lbs/130hp = 19.7lb/hp

(must... swap... turbo motor...)

The supra is arround 2700lbs with fender flares. Compound that with hitting almost 250 footpounds of torque at 2500rpm and my 4.1 final drive and I'd have the upper hand I think. But I'd still like to try the 1320 with ya.

Right now I am looking into buying a 2005 Ford Ranger Edge pickup 3.0L V-6 5spd manual - $17,505 (with my negative equity on my car - this comes to around $19500), currently awaiting word on financing.

1st time driving a manual, and did pretty well - only troubles I had was trying to engage the clutch without stalling it to start moving (need to give it gas as I add more clutch - something I wasn't doing), I also had a problem with downshifting, somehow I went from 5th to 3rd while trying to go to 4th. I have no problems at all upshifting.

I did test drive a Ford F-150 XL 4.2L V-6 5spd, and it seemed to be easier to shift (longer stick I suppose?), and I also tested a F-150 V-6 Automatic, and compared to a manual, the auto seemed slower to accellerate. (Note - this $21,560 truck including my negative equity would have been around $23,750).

Dealer told me that as a baseline, you can figure on a payment of $20 per $1000 financed.

UK finance is terrible compared to US finance. Over the pond they want you guys to buy a new car. Over here they make it expensive and difficult. Only the cheaper makes that no one really want offer 0% and then you normally have to pay 50% deposit and throw in you left leg.

Every time I visit the USA It always shocks me how cheap your cars are (even when the exchange rate is not as good as it is) and how good the finance most Manufacturers offer...

Football, meat pies, kangaroo's and holden cars is the jingle from a 1970's Holden commercial ....

Car ownership cost varies - Cars can be pretty cheap but certain types are expensive .. we have alot of local made Japanese and Korean models (as well as Aussie cars) but imports, like my Peugeot, cost more as they are shipped here from overseas.

We are not short of choice, but rarely big cars are not the norm, smaller economical cars are the kings here along with "utes" and other sport utilities, gas guzzling tanks are uncommon.

Many models are rebadged for the local market, both Ford and Holden rebadge European cars and modify them for the Australian Market (the Vauxhauls for example are Holdens here)

With a population of only 20 Million we tend to borrow from other countries alot so we can justify the variety for the low relative sales.

Steel top convertible like mine is perfect for the climate and the 2.0 litre zippy engine great for the long distances we tend to travel here.

Working all weekend taking apart my parts car and replacing the bad panels on my car with the good ones from the parts car is hard work. I got a nice sunburn and a multi-colored car as a result. It also was a good excuse to go to Lowes and buy new tools.

Next step is to fix the trim around the windows, rebuild and improve the suspension and paint it a dark metalic silver. Then I'm gonna get old school SSR MkII-R four spoke wheels.

Buddy J, Car Craft had an article a few years ago about painting your car in flat black primer, for temporarily making the car a single color until you can afford the time/money to paint it. The primer is cheap, easy to apply, and looks pretty good (the job can be done for around $100 if you borrow the compressor and paint gun). You just have to remember to use sealing primer that is waterproof. You might want to consider that option if the paint job is going to be some time away.

Buddy J
21 Apr 2005, 06:02pm
I've thought about priming it all one color. There are some small dents and dings that need a bit of body work, and of course the whole thing needs sanded before I can put any paint down. I'm going to price paintjobs (not Maaco, I want it nice) and see how long it will be before I can afford one. If it's going to be a while, I'll prime it. If I can afford it soon, I'll let them deal with all the painting as I don't have a good spot to spray at the moment.

Buddy J
5 Jul 2005, 05:26pm
Preacher, in staying true to the Ford history, I think it would be only right to stripe the car like the GT350. Twin stripes over the hood and top as per the lower pic and then side stripes like what's on the red car.

Mullets and Flowmasters are required. :mullet:

Buddy Jesus,
I agree except I like the large middle stripe flanked by two smaller stripes on both the sides and top. I know it isn't fully retro, but IMHO that is the beauty of the 2005 Stang...it's a combination of the modern and the classic.

pseudonym,
I'm planning a series of mods. For the body, I find the stock look to be classy, so the only thing I'll do are the stripes. I hate every single body kit I've seen so far. They just detract from a great look. For the suspension, I'm going to put 18" silver Kazera KZ-As with 255s (front) and 285s (rear) and drop it about 1" with an Eibach Pro Plus Kit. For the engine, I'm doing headers, X-back, mufflers (thinking Borla or Bassani), a CAI, performance tune, and (don't tell the missus) a Procharger or Supercharger. :mullet:

Woohoo! Not more than 3 hours ago we just bought a new car. This is actually a first. We've always always had used cars. Finally the truck was just getting to be a money hole and we needed to replace. Figured, why not get a new one for once? Got $8k off due to GM employee discounts, GM card points, and a thousand-dollar trade in! Sorry for the pictures - my brother is still learning to work his camera's settings. And ignore the crappy driveway and dirt all over - we just put in gardens right there.

Unfortunately, they say I can never drive it. Well, if they're in the car too, but that's very rarely. I can understand, but it still sucks - this thing is wicked, and I'm a good driver! :)

2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with leather interior. 2.8 200HP V6. It's got that funky OnStar installed, and we get 30 minutes/month for free for 2 months, with the built-in cell phone. The coolest thing is the automatic headlights, and the fact that it's only got ~40 miles on it :D

That looks nice. Don't know why but black can make any car look awesome. Get some tinted windows and it'll look better :mullet:

Nice wheels, gargoyle.

Thanks! It'll look better one day when it's not three shades of primer :D

That's a mighty fine Mustang you've got there. I haven't liked any mustang in the last decade or two until now. These new ones look great, and have a little bit of hustle under the hood. I'd definitely go for that dark gray stripe. Side stripes like Buddy J suggests would really polish the look too.

Nice GP, entropy. Personally, I've never been a fan of GM body styles, but they have nice interiors. I did some research on the GTO when I was car shopping, but chose the Stang based on price, body style, and aftermarket parts availability. The GTO and GP are still very nice, quick sedans (the GTO is actually faster than a stock GT).

Garg,
that Volvo is tight. It has a cool Swedish Old School vibe. Put a sweet paint job on it. I'm with you on the Stang. A good friend of mine has a '66 that he restored and parks it right next to mine at work. It's amazing how much is similar. Like looking at a grandkid sitting on grandpa's lap...

Gentlemen,
thank you all for your support. I have decided to perform the "stripage" ceremony. :mullet:

I just got a Benzvertible! w00t!

It's a 1985 380 SL w/ 126k miles and both tops. It's been garaged for it's life and is in excellent condition. Once it gets a bath and a wax, I'll add a few more pics because the paint really shines.

I picked it up yesterday afternoon. Purchased it from a friend of the family for almost half of low book because he knew I'd take care of it and he needed space in the garage for his new 350Z ;). You don't pass up an offer that good.

Well, I know what one I've got my eye on. (Hopefully they allow hot-linking, I can't FTP a copy up to my webserver from here).

The Ariel Atom... My kind of car.

http://www.arielatom.com/04/side/side.jpg

Even in it's stock 160Hp configuration, it's power to weight beats out a Prosche 911. But on mine, I'd spring for the 300hp supercharged version.

Because 468kilos with 300hp is just fun.

You can read up about the car @ http://www.arielatom.com

I will own one of these once I have the ability to own a supercar, namely, have an indoor garage for it, the 160hp model starts at 32k, ~50k for the supercharged... and for 0-100-0 in 10.88 seconds, and 0-60 in 2.97... well, I think it'd be worth it.

Buddy,
Just a suggestion, but you should find out if the timing chain has been changed yet. If not, have it looked at. those motors were notorious for breaking the timing chain and the resulting damage to the engine is a lot more costly than replacing the chain. I had a car lot and bought and sold those cars back then and into the early 90's and it was a mojor problem. But, if the former owner did all of the services, it's just possible the dealer has already done the replacement. It's just worth checking out.

Enjoy the beautiful car!!

The timing chain was replaced by the previous owner who took the car in to the dealership for a yearly check and it's in good condition from what he says.

On the BenzWorld forum I was told the 85 (being the last year for the 380 SL) has a dual row chain that was introduced in 84/85 to rectify the problems associated with the single chain. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

But, thanks for the advice. I'm sure learning a lot about the Benz. It's a cool car.

In the latest issue of Octane magazine, Rowan Atkinson aka Mr. Bean does a review of the Atom- he didn't like it :wtf: That car is awesome and the nice thing is that the engine is a Honda unit (out of a Type-R civic or integra?) so it should last a while.

How does it compare to a Caterham or Birkin of similar spec and price?

Buddy J, the Ariel Atom's engine is lifted straight out of the Honda Type-R hatchback. The supercharged version is quite fast, as fast as the hypercars such as the Mercedes SLR, Ferrari Enzo, etc for a lot less money :D. http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/powerlaps/

Top Gear did a review of the Ariel Atom in series 5 and Jeremy Clarkson loved it. It even has a boot .

Very, very nice BJ. Some of the Mercedes body styles, never look old, no matter the age. Yours is one of them. Sounds like it's condition is very good too. Some people buy older cars that have emotional appeal, with the cars eventually nickle and diming the owner to death. Ha, I did that when I was 21. Looks like you've got a classy, well-made car that will serve you well.

I'm 15 right now, armed and dangerous with a permit, and we're looking at trucks for me coming up towards the end of this year. My 16th is on Feb. 19th. I'm pretty set on a 2005 or 2006 Ford Ranger. I love em. I'll want extended cab and extended bed, and I don't want an XLT. We might end up with an Edge. Here's a picture of one that we'll be looking for in the near future, but don't have any plans or deals yet. It's my future ride hopefully. :)

I'll wanna change the rims once I get a job (Summer '06), and possibly change the sound system a bit.

Not an emotional ride like a Mustang or Mercedes, but it comes through for me time after time. Four wheel drive to get home in the winter, and towing capacity for brush, logs, rocks (hillside erosion control & landscaping), and tomorrow - railroad ties. You can laugh at the color if you wish. I bought it used in '98 for what I thought was good deal and didn't argue with the color.

Hmm, well, there's some emotion here too. Good memories of the truck getting me to some remote fishing spots!

Oh, I had that coming, didn't I! Oh yeah, cool as heck, and stuck like cement in the snow in the winter.
