If you have high-quality photos of your car that you've taken that you'd be willing to release under the GNU Free Documentation License or the Creative Commons License, I am looking for them, as I am involved in WikiProject:Automobiles. If you'd like to help out, please leave me a comment at this link (http://www.ghoosdum.com/blog/?p=13) or PM me, rather than cluttering up this thread. THANKS!

So my Rx-7 started acting up, and I lost patience for coaxing it to run when it's below freezing. Looks like I'm going to sell it :(. It'll be sad to see it go, as it handled better than any car I've ever ridden in, excluding snow/ice conditions. One day, when I have more disposable income and a garage, I may once again fill that hole in my heart that can only be filled with an 80s hatchback.
In the meantime, I've got this. It's a 2002 Jeep, 4.0L I6, with 32" tires. About 54k miles. Those tires are superb for off-roading, but they cut my fuel economy down from the "bad" category to the "dismal" category. But other than a long trip coming up to see friends and family in TX and OK in a couple weeks, it'll mostly see duty driving the few miles to work and on the trails in the northern New Mexico region. The 4WD should make the drive to work in icy conditions considerably less scary than it was in the Rx-7. I spent far more money than I expected to spend on a car, but I finally have something reliable (I also bought an extended warranty). The knowledge that when I got out there in the morning and turn the key, the engine will start, is an undescribable comfort, and still a pretty novel feeling. I may have to sell it before I go to grad school, but I'll have fun in the meantime.

I'm 15 right now, armed and dangerous with a permit, and we're looking at trucks for me coming up towards the end of this year. My 16th is on Feb. 19th. I'm pretty set on a 2005 or 2006 Ford Ranger. I love em. I'll want extended cab and extended bed, and I don't want an XLT. We might end up with an Edge. Here's a picture of one that we'll be looking for in the near future, but don't have any plans or deals yet. It's my future ride hopefully. :)

I'll wanna change the rims once I get a job (Summer '06), and possibly change the sound system a bit.
there is a 2003 ford ranger edge at the local car dealership in PA for only 8800. its a 5 speed and i drove it. it is a beautiful but unfortunetly i dont have that kninda cash and i would like to not get in debt until i get out of high school. not sure where you live but just thought you might wanna know. its in great shape and everything.

Yeah they're great trucks. My grandpa has a 6-cyl 2wd 2001 and I drove it last summer when I was up there visiting him. It's really fun and has a crapload of power. We got it stuck while offroading - got the diff. stuck on a huge rock :p It took about 30mins of sloshing around in the mud and jacking it up then pushing it before we got it free. No damage was done though - just lots of fun and lots of mud everywhere.
I'm not sure if my dad will buy me a 6-cyl. He's all about gas mileage and safety now, so he might insist on a 4-cyl. He pretty much ruled out 4wd for it being pointless (not to me!) and gas guzzling. Oh well - maybe I'll get lucky and score a 6-cyl anyways. You'll definitely see a thread when we do buy one, and it should be soon.

I test drove a Ranger once and hated it. I never liked my Explorer, either. And the Explorer had the same lackluster 4.0L V6, unless it's been changed the last few years (mine was a '92). I think the 3.0L (or is it a 3.3L) V6 that was available was probably better. Couldn't be much worse, anyway.
I think for all the things you were saying you liked about the Ranger, there are other cars that could do it better. But, Rangers might be available for cheaper.

i personally like my dad 83 f-150. but due to the burnouts i was doin it it(its auto) the transmision is about to go out. it doesnt want to shift and when it does it jerks the whole truck. we are goin to drop the pan this weekend and see if we find anything. it isnt 4wd or anything fancy. no posi traction either so just on tire spins when im doin burnouts. and the trerad is getting pretty thin on that tire.

From the newer 2005 Rangers that I was looking at, the 2.4L I-4 gets about 20MPG City, 25MPG highway, the 3.0L V-6 gets similar mileage, the 4.0L gets about 15MPG City, 20MPG highway.

Actual mileage and EPA estimates often vary greatly. Check it out and let us know what you really get.
My dad has a 2004 Ranger with the auto and 4 cyl, and he gets around 23/24 in his driving mix, which is actually right on target for the EPA estimate of 20 city and 26 highway, but I've often heard bad things about the mileage that the V6s get... if I'm pleasantly surprised, though, I might consider a V6 Ranger myself...

Couple of reasons....
1) My son had a couple of minor accidents with it.
2) I don't really need it right now.
I plan to work on it this spring/summer and will either drive it some or sell it. It only has about 2000 miles on it since I replaced the engine. It just needs some cosmetic work. :)

it is rusting out
i painted the hood, roof, and trunk bc the paint was pealing(permant fix not temp)
radio only works when it want to
headlights are dim due to a faulty alternator
transmission slips if you try to go faster than 2 miles per year
the shifter falls apart and you have to try to put it back on before you need to shift again
when the radio does work the speakers are blown in the front so you only have rear sound
the front left tire is out of round and out of balance
the e-brake will randomly just not work when you need it to
and yet the car still passes inspection year after year

I thought I had the worst gas mileage here, but I guess not. I get about 15mpg in the Jeep. Aerodynamics like a brick, big and ancient engine design, and the lift/big tires don't help much on the highway, but are great offroad. Too bad I commute to work on pavement ;D

That's what happens for us guys who roll on fat low-profile meat.
I've gone from a 225/60-14 (Cooper Cobras:thumbsdow ) to 245/45-16 in the back because you can't find a 60 series 14" tire anymore that has any performance characteristic. 14" rubber in general is reserved for generic crap tires these days, let alone finding anything in 225.
So far, I'm looking at these:

That's been my experience as well so far. People will make fun of it since it's so small (I know, trust me lol) but just ignore it! My friend's dad has a huge yellow F250 4x4 Diesel with a turbocharger and all kinds of exhaust stuff (he owns a muffler shop) and it's awesome... he referred to my truck as the "little ford ranger truck" the other day :p
What kind of mileage do you get? Mine's awful - need to get it looked at. I get 12-14, rarely any higher, and I don't drive it crazy.

Rangers are good solid trucks.
Agree, I had a an 87 Ranger STX 4x4 that I had till 1993..
Other than routine maintenance, the list of broken/repaired items on this truck was tiny.
Cracked the oilpan four-wheeling, not the truck's fault...
Replaced the upper radiator hose and thermostat..
Fuel injectors got fouled from bad gas on my drive from Boston to Tucson, again not truck's fault.
U-joints needed to be replaced, ...... At 149,000 miles!!!
Truck had 214,000 miles on it when I sold it. Guy who bought it was a mechanic at the local schoolbus yard. He said the compression on all six cylinders was amazing for a truck w/ 200K + miles...

I don't floor it... just accelerate a little faster than the other cars sometimes, sometimes step on it and get it to 4,000 - 5,000 RPMs. It's a 3.0 V6 Automatic about 150hp and man it suffers on the highway - has a horrible time getting up the hills on the Interstate. I HATE automatic - probably wont get another Automatic, and most definitely never another V6. It's just not enough power for me. I got 14mpg on the last tank of what I think was relatively reasonable driving. Maybe my aftermarket exhaust is affecting it somehow...
Gargoyle
31 May 2006, 02:21am
It's just that that 3.0L engine is not the best V6 ever made, from any point of view. I mean, my '90 Camry 2.5L V6 had 158hp, and that was one of the worst V6's Toyota made.
At any rate, driving slower would probably net you a couple more MPG if you wanted it. My old Explorer with the 4.0 V6 got a couple more MPG when I kept the RPMs under 2.5k (which was very doable in both city and highway). Besides, reving it to 5k made would make a tremendous raucous, but didn't net much more go-juice.

hah, when im drivign the tach is rarely BELOW 2,500rpm. lol. My car has a 3.1liter V-6, its not that bad, but its not that fast either. Im usually between 2,000 and 4,500. That is where the powerband is at on it. The only time i push it anyhigher than that is to get it to shift when I race, becuase it shifts faster if i let it run to 5,800, the automatic hates it when I floor it, let off the gas, let it shift, and floor it again, another reason why I hate auto's. My car would be so much faster if it was a manual. The only thing I like about my car is that its a rice killer. I can pull up to about any honda and he can kiss my ass goodbye. and my car looks like a granny car from the outside (one more reason I dont like it) but hell, at least it doesnt drive like a granny car. Speaking of granny cars, I'd take my granny's car. A 2003 cadilac sts-c (or was it sts-v, i forget)...anyway, that thing is FAST, and comfy.

If that was a car in the US, I'd say it looks like a late-model Corolla S with a Honda's front end. :hair:

You should see the so-called "conversion packages" they come up with at the local GMC lot around here. The fit and finish is abysmal on the side skirts, flares and valances they put on the trucks and vans. It makes me sick.

I think the side skirts look pretty good on Riddick's Honda (far better than what the local civic kids are doing), but they extend the size of the wheel wells and makes it look like it needs bigger wheels.

was thinking of dropping the car / adding larger rims ie 17" but the places i drive around have many inclines and bumps.. and the front skirt ALREADY has scratches underneath because of them.. even at very low speeds! so yea that and lack of $$ probably is the main deterrent for new rims.
personally i felt the car looked naked without the skirts.. thats why i put them on.
buddy jesus.. i believe the honda fit is a replica of the honda model we call the "Jazz" here. honda has been producing the cities all along over here.. this is the recent facelifted model.

I finally got a new ride! I've only been looking for three years...
2007 Mazda3i Touring
It has a 4-speed automanual transmission. At first I was looking at the 5-speed, which I much prefer, but the dealership was actually able to cut me a better deal on the auto, because they had 40 of them on the lot.
This car is head and shoulders above anything I've ever owned before. It handles like a dream and pulls like a V6. Mazda really has something good on their hands with this design. It really feels like a car that would cost ten grand more than it did.
The downside is that I got it on a lease: 27 months, 15k miles per year. The payments are really low, and the buyout value at the end of the term is about $2k lower than two-year old 3's are selling for right now, so I think I made out okay, even though I've never considered leasing a car before.
I'm just happy to have something that I will feel good driving.

Pretty sweet! How's the automanual?
I almost bought a Mazda3 5-door instead of my Jeep, but the manual's clutch had a really long throw to it. The travel distance felt even longer than my 40-year-old Volvo's. I couldn't get over that. Did you test drive a 5-spd, too? I was wondering if the one I drove had a clutch issue, or if they were all like that.
GHoosdum
25 Mar 2007, 10:02pm
The automanual isn't too bad - the only problem is there are only four gears to go through! In full auto mode, though, the car is in 4th gear by 40mph (under light acceleration) and putting it in automanual mode allows me to stretch the car's legs a little bit. The transmission shifts almost instantly in either direction, unlike most of the other automanual cars I've driven, all of which seemed rather hesitant to shift at the driver's command.
The first car that I test drove was optioned exactly like the one I got except it had a 5-speed. I liked the shifter's throw, but you're right; the throw on the clutch was a bit long. The pedal was very light though, almost effortless. The only thing I didn't like about driving the 5-spd car was that the clutch point was sort of vague. It took me a little bit to get the feel of when in the throw of the pedal the clutch would actually catch. I'm sure I would have gotten used to it if I had bought the other car, but it was a little odd during the test drive.
Overall, the car feels very solid and substantial. Materials quality is great and everything was put together with the utmost of care in Hiroshima, Japan. Popping the hood and seeing all the plastic makes me realize just how far automobiles have come since my 1968 Dodge Dart. ;)

The Cherokee is basically a wagon with good ground clearance (especially compared to what are being marketed as SUVs these days). Which I'm okay with, because I think wagons are awesome. Jeep even had a similar vehicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagoneer) with "wagon" in the name.
I wouldn't really call a C30 a wagon, though. I usually picture cars with four doors when I think of wagons.

As they say: Different strokes for different folks. I have always been fond of hatch backs and apart from one car I owned in between, I would say the last 5 vehicles I've driven have had their backsides chopped off :D
Despite their legendary reputation for safety and the incredible engineering in this car, if Volvo had not introduced this model I would not have upgraded the car I had right now and when it was time to upgrade, it probably wouldn't have been a Volvo. I have never liked the shape of Volvo up until I saw this one.
When the very first pictures started appearing on the net around June last year I just knew I had to have one. Months before it's launch here in South Africa, I had been hounding my nearest Volvo dealer about the car. I got my name on the list for the very first batch that shipped to this country, so right now I'm probably one of I think 4 people who owns my specific model in our whole province. That won't be for long, that's for sure. I think this car is going to be extremely popular and will probably win numerous awards around the world.

How's the room in the back? Could adults sit back there comfortably?
Gargs I'm afraid it's a very tight squeeze for someone like me. I'm just on 6' and have got legs like a grasshopper. My seat is set a bit back to accommodate my length and if anyone around the same size had to sit behind me, they not going to enjoy the ride :-/
What's more, in other cars, you can shift a bit to the middle if you sitting in the back and sort of stick your legs between the two front seats, which is what I invariably do when I'm in the back of a car. With these you can't. There is no middle piece and they bucket seats, so you gotta stay where you are.
Also the trunk isn't really that small. It's not for the family holiday, thats for sure. However if you prepared to pile stuff up to the point where the rear view is blocked, then you going to be able to get a lot of stuff in there.
One feature that blew me away was the size of the glove compartment (or cubby hole as we call it). It 's really deep and is able to take a few files that hold A4 size pages. That suits me as I've always got files on the front seat next to me when I'm driving and I normally end up fishing them off the floor after arriving at my destination :)
