Yesterday I made a suggestion (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=612085) on the Steam forums that game saves get tied to your Steam account and are able to be "taken with you" wherever you happen to log on to Steam, and today a Valve rep responded:
"This is a popular feature request and it's likely that it will be supported eventually. Thanks for the suggestions!"
Now, of course the key word is "eventually" but as they said- this is a popular feature request. It would be fantastic to be able to take your game saves with you.

I think about that feature every time I have to start my game over when I reinstall or install elsewhere.

Can't help but think the unlockable achievements are the first step in this.

I think the Achievements were added mostly because Orange Box came out for the 360 as well, and Valve came out with the Community features to make the PC experience just as feature-rich.

The fact that they only work when in online mode has to mean something though. No reason why they couldnt include the start of a new chapter in half life for instance.

That's the only type of thing that I think really needs to stick with the account. I could care less about my individual save-games, but I was disapointed when I reinstalled HL2, and found that I couldn't just start from whatever chapter I wanted, I said to the screen, "What? I beat this game already, shouldn't it at least remember that I already beat it?"
It would also be nice if it remembered my key-bindings from one install to another.
Heck: It would be nice if Bioshock would just remember my key-bindings from session to session. :p
