Today AMD reported $1.6B revenue for the third quarter, an 18% increase over Q2, although operating loss was at a cringe-worthy $226M, $120M of which was "acquisition related" (integration, severance of former contracts, etc. It's not easy acquiring a gigantic graphics company).
Things look shaky from the outside right now, but AMD remains optimistic. CFO Robert J. Rivet said,
<blockquote>"“We are encouraged by the progress we made in our third quarter financial results. We delivered a strong revenue increase, gained 8 percentage points of gross margin and reduced our operating loss by more than half."</blockquote>
Part of a larger strategy? Their ATI division is doing increasingly well, adoption rates on the HD2000 series of cards is picking up steam, and AMD continues to excel in the datacenter, despite the massive exodus to Intel on the enthusiast and OEM desktop.
If Phenom makes an interesting show and ATI pulls something amazing out of their sleeves, AMD <em>could</em> make another "Athlon-era" comeback.
The beauty? The consumer always wins. I like having the choice, that's for sure.
