Windows Apps in Linux

I just finished installing WINE on my dual boot and I have been playing around with the config file. I cant seem to figure it out. Has anyone here used this program? If so can you point me where I might be able to go to get help setting up the config file? If no one knows this program can you recommend one so that I can try to get windows apps to run on linux?

Best performance and compatibility wise for Windows Me and down apps on Linux is Win4Lin 5.0, BUT expect a speed performance penalty and an upper limit on what Windows sees as RAM limits of 128 MB. This program is by NetTraverse, and is more able to run more programs than Wine when we are talking generic, Corel, and Office suite programs. Norton system works 2003 and up limps on it, as do any current Adobe products, especially those that use Adobe custom memory management. Expect a storage performance penalty on a fast storing machine that may be exaggerated with higher speed and higher size drives. But, MOST Windows programs will RUN. They are trying to work on these issues some, but the underlying memory virtualization was tuned for older boxes, and is called QEMM. Part of teh performance impact is beause Win4Lin acts like a translator, from virtualized Widnows compatible handlers to Linux handlers. You WILL need a legal Windows CD also, for Me or back, a FULL install, as the Win4Lin installer runs the Widnows install from HD after copying files from CD.

VMware is available, but is both best used to run Linux in Windows and needs LOTS of RAM and HD acerage and is very expensive.

Overall, best bang for buck out of Win4Lin, with an Enterprise kernel running and LOTS of RAM (I run one GIG of RAM for this minimum.) System impact of Win4Lin as to RAM including the kernel buffering to run Win4Lin with 98 SE is about 2.5 times the allocated RAM to Windows and 98 SE wants 128 MB to run right in Win4Lin.

Ageek, all of those Windows programs you talked about have Linux counter parts, star office comes to mind. I guess it really depends on WHAT you want to run really. Games have their own apps to run on Linux, although I have be able to run them in wine to some point. I say if you can't find a good counter part for a certin app in Linux then don't use it! If you need it that bad, run windows.
