my parents machine refused to boot into windows.
WHne u start the comp, it goes through POST, and then start to load windows, and then it's just black screen, so then i tried to start in SAFE MODE< it loads like 10 files and then just hangs.

So i got out my XP cd, and trying to do a restore install, it starts the windows installation thing, and then says unexpected error in D drive something something..

here is a list of stuff
Abit kt7a-r
athlon tbird 1gh
512mb of pc133 ram
1 wd 10 ghg hd, and 6 gig hd
1 liteon cd drive
some old ati rage video card
creative sblive 5.1
linksys network card
and 300watt power supply.

yes indeed it was one of the ram, i didn't even bother to try memtest, i just took out 1 stick, and comp didn't boot, so i know it was the stick inside that's dead, so i switched, and now working fine. thanks

While you have the rig open, eyeball the big caps on the board too. Abit turned out a bunch of early KT7-R and KT7A-R boards with faulty caps. If the caps are going bad, you will notice the top of the caps to be swollen and/or leaking, also around the bottom of the caps next to the mobo.
